What I have been up to
#1
Ok guys I haven't logged in in a long long time. Sorry about that.

I finished my BSBA, BA, MBA, CAGS and then enrolled in and put my PhD on hold. I also took two grad courses in instructional technology at USF here in Tampa. I completed a few VESI courses also. I might some day finish a MEd for fun.

The big news is that I found a new learning objective and have been working on it every day for the last six months. I am proud to say that I will be taking my private pilot checkride some time in the next few weeks as I have completed my written test, over 40 hours of flight training, solo practice, cross country solo, and have prepped for the oral portion of the checkride.

My last steps are to work on my practical test standards in which I am insufficient which include short field and soft field landings. Thats it. The rest is in the bag.
After I complete my PPL I may take a few trips around Florida and enjoy the scenery before launching into my instrument rating.

I might buy an airplane. Not sure. They are expensive to buy and maintain but are also expensive to rent so its a tossup.

I'll try to check in from time to time and reply to private messages but I am heads down in flight training right now so if you need me PM me.

Good luck on CLEP and college completion and have fun.

I have a CPL and used to fly right seat on a Beech 1900D, so let me know if you need some advice on buying a plane.

Once upon a time before I enrolled at TESC I was thinking about becoming a commercial pilot too. But after going through 3 different flight instructors and hearing their depressing job outlooks, I realized I was a little too old and didn't love flying enough to pursue this as a career. My 3rd flight instructor was a commercial airline pilot and he was teaching part time and he was basically broke living with his parents. But I think it's a great hobby but as a hobby for me personally, way too expensive. Good luck!

Wow, you HAVE been busy!

Good luck with your PPL. I think you will do fine! I never tested for mine but had loads of hours in single as well as twin engines. It's a cool skill to have and as long a you enjoy it and can afford it…rock on! horses, boats and pools are expensive too, but if that's what makes you really love living and the journey of life…go for it!

I used to fly out of MMU, which is a short flight from the very busy Newark Airport and only a hop, skip and a jump from LaGuardia and JFK airports. I was SOOO afraid that my test flight might be close to those areas I chickened out. Plus I couldn't afford the license at the age of 21. I still might go for it down the road…let me check in with you later and see how you like it Big Grin

Congratulations! I have to laugh at Sanantones comment… and I would agree…sound like you are an education junkie! Big Grin I like that Smile

All the best,
Tara

Thanks guys. I always tell people about CLEP and aviation because almost everyone I know has a connection to both. I have met many pilots and people who are married to, a brother of, or have friends who are pilots. Its a nice little club to belong to.

As for the masters, yes I am kind of an education junkie. I love learning and completing goals, especially those with a degree or something tangible at the end. Its a personality trait of mine and as long as it is not destructive I'll just roll with it.

I may take you up on that how to buy a plane comment.

I need to save some cash and see if I really want to be an airplane owner or if this is just another thing I will grow out of. At least that is what the wife tells me Wink

Awesome adventure. I remember when I was working on my PPL, I really enjoyed it. I still enjoy it, its an amazing feeling climbing into that aircraft to fly around and do something that only a few people can actually do.

The instrument rating is an adventure, I found it to be something far more difficult then the PPL program, but totally worth it in the end. When you gain a few more hours, you may consider joining the Civil Air patrol - U.S. Air Force Aux and fly their planes for free on Air Force assigned missions. To be useful, you need a couple of hundred hours with at least 50 hrs cross country as PIC.

Those short field and soft field landings will come, they can be a challenge but fun at the same time. For the ground knowledge for the checkride, look into some of the Sporty's videos, I used the Sporty's private pilot DVDs to really prepare for mine, of course I used them to help pass the written too since the classroom ground school course was a joke and a waste of time and money.

COSC gave me some college credit hours for my pilots license. That made it an even better deal for me.

I agree….Sporty's was a great help! That and loads of hours practicing landing in weird locations. I landed in Block Island, RI and I swear, I was going to hit the billboard that was stupidly placed too close to the runway. I think that was part of the reason my instructor wanted be to land there. It was worth it though…Block Island is beautiful and quaint Smile
