pretty good review from excelsior. more questions??
#1
Hi all, It seems I received a pretty good unofficial review from excelsior. Applied 75 of my prior credits. I am leaning toward Exc because I am a ny resident and will receive both tap and pell grant (assuming I take 12 credits with them). Plus I am a vet and member of one of their partners. $0 enrollment fee, $390 per credit, $130 grad fee. But I want to get this completed somewhat quickly and will be using alternative credits where I can.
The areas that worry me most are: "precalculus or statistics" & "7 credits in electrical technology concentration (6 Upper Level)"

Going down the list if anyone can offer suggestions on what may fulfill the requirements it would be appreciated.

In the Professional core I was told that:
BUS341 could be tested with Principles of Management CLEP
ACC211 can be tested with the CLEP Financial accounting or uexcel
BUS220 can be tested with Information Systems and Computer Applications (CLEP) or Introduction to Computing (DSST)
I am guessing IT 390 Project Management may be completed with Sophia (Project Management)

Bachelor of Professional Studies in Technology Management, Area of
Focus in Electrical Technology approximately 53 semester credits needed as
follows:

Arts and Sciences Component:
3 credits in ethics -BUS 323 Business Ethics
6 credits in humanities – MUS210 & 211 History of Rock and Roll 1 & 2
3 credits in precalculus or statistics -BUS 233 Business Statistics OR MAT 116 Precalculus Algebra
6 upper level additional credits in arts and sciences

Professional Component:
Professional Core:
3 credits in General Management - BUS 341 Management Concepts and Applications
3 credits in Leadership -BUS 452 Business Leadership
3 credits in Accounting-ACC 211 Financial Accounting
3 credits in Computer Applications- BUS 220 Workplace Communication with Computers
3 credits in Project Management -IT 390 Project Management
Technology Management Core:
3 credits in Technology and Society -Tech 230
3 credits in Engineering Economics -Tech 330
3 credits in Introduction to Energy Utilization -Tech 340
3 credits in Integrated Technology Management Assessment- Tech 490 (capstone – must be taken with Excelsior College)

Professional Component Electives
7 credits in electrical technology concentration
1 credit Information Literacy Requirement – INL 102Information Literacy

For Project Management, CompTIA Project+ may be an option. Excelsior used to be very friendly with IT certs and might still be. I studied for two weeks and passed it using the Sybex study guide. If you have a business background and have been involved in projects that were managed by a PM, it should be mostly common sense. Only a few formulas to memorize.

ALEKS has Stats and Pre-Calc. Stats at Sohia and Straighterline. There are other options too.

+1 for ALEKS use to complete both STAT and Precalculus. For Project Management, take it at Sophia.

Did they tell you where the remainder can be taken from?

You may want to check their equivalency guide for CLEP/DSST, PF and also Saylor, Straighterline, Study.com for arts/science and business upper level.

Your other option would be APUS for the Upper Level specialty courses or another Uni as I think Excelsior is expensive.

There are some people on this forum who are very well versed on financial aid, I'm not one of them, but they will help you with that part.

You can take Business Ethics at SL, DSST, study.com, or UExcel
Business Leadership might be able to be had through study.com (Leadership & Organizational Behavior might work) or CSU-Global has a bunch if EC will accept it
For Financial Accounting, you can also take Accounting I through SL
Info Lit can be taken at Tor College Credits or Penn Foster

I also think you should do Stats OR PreCalc at ALEKS, it's $20/mo (you don't have to do both).

For UL Arts & Sciences, you can do DSST's, UExcel's, TECEP's, and a couple of study.com courses that will fit the bill (Advanced Ops Management & Advanced Technical Writing).

I would take this list to EC and get pre-approval for anything you would like to take, and I know there's a way to get your Pell money to pay for it (or at least use leftover Pell money), but you need to plan it all out first.

My preliminary review was different from the final one I got for EC. i lost 9-12 credits. It may not seem like a lot to some but it really made a difference for me. Especially with cost and the specific courses i needed to finish. Just something to keep in mind

Ouch, usually the preliminary review is where you would get less credits and the full evaluation is where they apply everything. I guess it's always case by case basis as everyone won't have the same credits coming through from the same institutions. Was that a major factor for you changing to Kaplan instead?

Absolutely was! along with cost. The 4 classes that I loss were considered *duplicates*. I appealed this - but was shot down in a matter of days lol... Kaplan accepted just about all of my previous coursework. I only took the capstone, 1 straigherline course and 1 course assessment and was done in 3-4 months at Kaplan.

That's awesome, good job. Sophia PM should be UL when you transfer it into your degree.
I thought it would be a harder course, as it's the only UL course from them I think.
