tesc cap-311
#1
Hey folks,

Just got my initial eval at tesc, and one of my prior classes evaluated as cap-311. I can't find that in their catalog, does anyone know what that is on their end? The course it came from was web development programming.

It also shows up as an elective, when there is still space for UL classes in major.(currently set to liberal studies) My database programming shows up in the major, so I'm not sure why another programming class wouldn't. Waiting on a reply from them.

The PLA database holds quite a bit (but not all) of TESCs transfer equivalency credit descriptions. Save the link, it is a great resource tool.
Thomas Edison State College: Prior Learning Assessment Course Description

CAP/CMP courses are not usually considered Natural Science credit (ex COS, some CIS) which is why it's under electives and not the area of study.

Here is the description:
Desktop Publishing   (CAP-311)
The course will provide a basic understanding of word processing software used to perform desktop publishing. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: operate a desktop publishing program using fundamental techniques acquired through the course; layout and design advertising, promotional and other organization planning/management products using desktop publishing techniques.

*Edit to add: See the following post by Cookderosa for more guidance. She gives the most concise explanation on the matter I've ever read. Alpha Numerics for Dummies
Also, take a look at post #9 as an example of how TESC designated the students computer credit. Hope this helps!

Sorry for any crazy formatting, I'm on my tablet and having problems editing. And I keep closing the browser by mistake...Ugh.

In my experience , generally, TESC puts COS and CIS courses in area of study and general education requirements, but CMP and CAP courses to the electives area. How did they transcribe your database programming - as COS, CIS or CAP?

the database class they did mark cis

hmm, desktop publishing is not appropriate at all for that class :/ it was all coding

Not to worry there is a process to appeal transferred courses. Get a copy of the course syllabus (best) and or course description from college catalog and submit to the registrar for an appeal. Keep in mind there is a time restriction so handle quickly.

html,css,js/jquery,perl,python

I think I'd rather it be counted as nat sci LL than an UL nothing

I was short of 1 credit for area of study ( BA in CS) and ask the advisor if I can use 1 credit course from local university for HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, and they told me that this can be used only for electives. Though I found 1 credit course String languages ( it was Pearl) and TESC put it in area of study.

that seems strange to exclude that type of course from a CS program for sure - most CS programs actually require it

looked through the link, doesn't seem there's really anything else suitable, so it may just be the way it is

Not necessarily, as I mentioned earlier the PLA database is not complete, it is simply a resource used by incoming/current students.

The appeal process is easy, a simple email asking them to review the course syllabus (attach to email) because you feel the course transfer was not an appropriate match. If they agree and there is not a better match in the actual database, they will either create a new course code or assign the generic XXX-X99 (ex COS-399).
