How many have you seen with a second bachelors that went unused up to SS? Degrees are better in some hands than others, but we play the odds. Around 4 classes make up the basic difference between a second bachelors and a masters. We also see many options for expediting the Masters process, especially the MBA. Through my career I happen to actually know something about the utility of a CJ degree as it compares to a HS degree, it would be a lot like having a degree in sociology then a second degree in social science. No one would care beyond the checking of the first box.

An accounting degree or CS as a second might make some sense, ID still probably recommend a masters as that is the basic level for advancement in many cases.

Someone with a CJ undergrad and an MBA would have excellent prospects from an educational perspective. Someone with a CJ and Seperate HS degree would have a slightly silly looking resume and no real edge.

Agree with getting the employer to foot the bill, that's great advice!

For a master's in CS, you need a BA/BS in CS or something closely related or take undergrad CS courses. It's not like MBA or law school where you can major in anything as undergrad and go for the MBA/JD.

Agree on CJ/HS. The 2nd degree should never be a near carbon copy of the first.

Degrees are definitely better in some hands than others. If your boss isn't paying for that MBA, IMHO I believe it's likely that it is in the wrong hands. This may mean you should change employers because you may have hit a glass ceiling that won't be fixed with the MBA.

When I go back to work after my youngest graduates from HS in a few years, I will have had 20 years of no working, and it will be difficult to give references for previous jobs (people have died, companies have gone under, etc.). So I will be finishing up my BSBA soon, and then probably getting my MBA over the next couple of years. I don't have an employer who will pay (I guess my hubby might count?). It will cost somewhere between $5k-$7k. I do not think this will be a waste of time or money at all. Since I won't have recent job experience, it will certainly help to have recent schooling under my belt instead. Because I don't want to start at the bottom of the ladder as if I have no experience and no degree. I want to start much higher up, basically where I was when I left the work force.

I don't think you can say that no one, under any circumstances, should pay for their own masters degree, and that it will be a waste of money for them to get one. You don't know most people's circumstances, the degree requirements in many industries, or a myriad of other things.

I paid for my master's, but it's an academic degree rather than a professional one like an MBA or MPA. I needed a master's to get into a PhD program. I've mostly been working for government and non-profit organizations since I've earned my BA. While the government usually has great health insurance and retirement benefits, tuition reimbursement/assistance is usually small or non-existent.

For someone with little to no experience, it's probably best to wait on the MBA. You're not likely to get a management position with little experience and having an MBA on your resume will make you look educationally-overqualified for entry-level positions.

I applied to all three for a BS in Emergency Management degree with tons of lower and upper level FEMA/TEEX/ACE/NFA/EMI college credits.

TESU said I still need 27 of their credits (another year):ack: They rejected almost all my FEMA credits. Better to do the ASU same requirements and a football team degree for that.:iagree:

COSC said I need 4 of their Public Service courses to add to my FEMA courses for an individualized degree in Emergency Management.

Excelsior took all my Clackamas FEMA credits but has yet to come out with their official Emergency Management degree. I do not want the CJ degree with Homeland Security minor. I am waiting for EC to come out with their official EM degree.

Other than the courses you'll have to take, there really isn't a difference between doing COSC's individualized studies or the CJ/homeland security degree at EC. Either way, you won't officially have a degree in emergency management if that's what you want. The closest thing COSC offers is public safety administration.

I don't understand this argument at all. TESU is still much cheaper and more flexible than ASU. That is the main reason why people choose the Big 3. If you want a degree from a top 200 school with a football team, then why consider the Big 3 for any degree?

The huge advantage of the big 3 is to test out and or use all your prior credits and ONLY take a capstone class with them for a degree.cheersmate Doing a whole year with just them is a waste of my time.

Most Big 3 students do not test out of their degrees. Most people choose the Big 3 for their liberal transfer credit policies. Someone who has a lot of emergency management/homeland security credits from an RA school (not laundered FEMA credits) could benefit from TESU's transfer credit policy. TESU's out-of-state tuition rate is also much cheaper than that of other public colleges and universities. It's actually on par with the average in-state tuition rate. Many people can't afford to attend a school like ASU.

ASU undergraduate tuition ranges from $490 to $553 per credit hour, regardless of residency status, with no additional program fees.
What it Costs | ASU Online Degree Programs | Arizona State University

TESU
Out-of-state residents: $520 per credit
Per Credit Tuition Plan
Thomas Edison State University | Per Credit Tuition Plan

Price is just one factor if one is going to spend a whole year taking their classes.
