I’m Dr. Ahmed Lachheb, and I'm an Associate Teaching Professor of Learning Design at the University of Kansas (KU) School of Education & Human Sciences. I'm the lead faculty for the new Master's program in Learning Design, which is competency-based, online, and flexible.
If you are looking for more information about the program or have questions, I’m happy to answer them!
Cheers!

Hi there! Here is the information about the cost and the number of courses you can take for the Learning Design program:

Costs
You pay one flat rate per term, not per class or credit hour.
  • $4,165 per 16-week term (Fall and Spring)

  • $2,083 per 8-week term (Summer)
Enrollment is structured as full-time for each term, allowing you to complete as many competencies as you’re able within that period.
Because tuition isn’t tied to individual courses, your total cost depends on how quickly you move through competencies.
Make more progress in a term, and you may need fewer terms overall.

Dr. Lachheb, thanks for jumping in here to provide us with information regarding this program. When will it be open for applications? As of now, the only options for graduate programs in education are:
  • Curriculum and Instruction (MSE)
  • Education Administration (MSE)
  • Educational Leadership and Policy (EdD)
  • Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (Non-Degree)
  • Special Education (Online) (MSE)
Thanks again!

Yes! You can take as many courses per term. Actually, you will need to be enrolled in at least 6 courses/competencies (= 6 credit hours) per term, unless you want a reduced load or you have fewere than 6 to finish the program!

RE: KU Jayhawk Flex CBE Masters in Ed, Performance Effectiveness, and Project Management - SpartacusPM - 05-04-2026

What will the course work look like? Is it papers, projects, tests, etc. Any proctoring?

Will you have to ask an advisor to open the next course or will you have access to all courses enrolled in per term?

RE: KU Jayhawk Flex CBE Masters in Ed, Performance Effectiveness, and Project Management - alachheb - 05-04-2026

Great questions!

For the Learning Design Program, and except for the two final capstone competencies, each course in the program is focused on one (1) competency (= 1 credit hour) and follows this structure:

1. Orientation Page: overview of the course and tips for success

2. Learning Modules (where you explore ideas/content → Practice design methods/techniques → apply what you learned in an authentic design project)

4. Discussion Boards: support independent thinking and professional dialogue.

5. Required vs. Optional Activities: Required activities align directly with performance indicators and prepare you for the competency assessment, and the optional activities provide additional enrichment or support.

6. Competency Assessment: summative task where you demonstrate mastery and need to (1) Engage with an authentic design brief of their choice, which typically includes three design briefs grounded in different professional instructional/learning design contexts; (2) Complete one integrated task, and (3) Be evaluated using a single rubric aligned to performance indicators. Assessments use a Mastery / Not Yet rubric. If marked Not Yet, you would receive feedback and may revise and resubmit until you meet all criteria for each performance indicator, thereby mastering the competency.

7. Time & Feedback Expectations: Modules and assessments include estimated time-on-task.

Each course/competency is around 50 hours of total work (+/- 5 hours). Most of the coursework involves individual applied/hands-on design projects. No required tests. No exams. No proctoring. No group projects.

You will have access to all courses you are enrolled in each term and will work closely with an advisor to ensure you are enrolled in courses that follow the required sequence and align with your preferences/availability.

Are we able to transfer any credit into the programs?

RE: KU Jayhawk Flex CBE Masters in Ed, Performance Effectiveness, and Project Management - alachheb - 05-05-2026

That depends on the program and could be requested.
