Did TESC change course requirements?? - Sola5girl - 09-21-2015

I'm finishing my liberal arts degree from TESC. Today I was looking over my academic evaluation (just reapplied after letting my student status lapse...I am doing the PPC plan, BTW) and I'm seeing new(?) course requirements showing up! Maybe this was discussed elsewhere? Maybe I missed something? Anyway I'm kind of freaking out!!

The courses I haven't seen before are "Civic Engagement," "Information Literacy," and "Oral Communication." What's up with this and why haven't I seen them before? Is there a way to fulfill the req's by testing out? If not, I'm done for...I'm super low on finances right now. Sad

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, TESC has revamped their Liberal Arts (Gen Ed) requirements. Since you had to re-apply, you fall under the new catalog with the latest changes. You may want to try and contact an academic advisor and see if they would be willing to re-instate you prior degree plan. This is not likely, but I always prefer to be told no that to assume no.

I believe all three have a CLEP/TECEP or other low cost option to fulfill this requirment. Keep in mind that since you switched to the PPC plan, you need to have 24 TESC credits (classes, TECEPs and possibly prior learning). So in addition to the capstone, you will need to complete another 21 credits. Have you completed any TESC credits previously?

I believe for the civic engagement you can take the American Govt Clep, for Info Literacy, you can take A&I Literature CLEP and for Oral communication, you can take the Public Speaking DSST. There are also other courses available. Have you posted your degree plan previously? Can you post your new plan?

Thanks for the info! Wow...that's a bummer. I will try to call them today along with a couple other questions I already had.

Yes, I've already done (6) TECEPs and my last one is this Friday.

I'll try to post my current degree plan below. I have already taken A&I Lit but have NOT done either of the others. I would be interested in what other options would be available.

Thanks again for the help.

Here is the link to TESC's Gen Ed requirements. TESC only shows their courses that fit into the new requirements, but this will give you a good idea of the type of credit that will fulfill the requirement. You can then ask an advisor if a certain CLEP or SL course will fill that requirement.

Thomas Edison State College | General Education - 2016 or After

It's possible that you may be able to move some courses around on your eval and then complete the remainder with another CLEP/DSST/TECP/UExcel/SL.

For example, if you move 3 credits of the A&I lit from Liberal Studies, you can fulfill the info lit requirement. You will then need to take another exam to fill the LS requirement in, but there are PLENTY of exams to do that. Is there any courses that are currently showing as "additional" on your eval(courses accepted but not applied to the degree)?

You have a lot of good candidates in the free credit section that you can move around also. You can then fill the free electives up with TEEX or other cheap/free credits. You also have taken intro to PoliSci. They have it in your free electives section. If you can get that moved, that may fill the civic engagement, not sure.

Here's a proposed plan. Since this requirement is new, please check with other members in your shoes and of course TESC to see if this could work.

Oral Communication (3)- take the Public Speaking DSST (~$80)
Information Literacy (3)- move 3 of the A&I lit credits over from your LS electives.(free)
Civic Engagement (3)- try to move Intro to PoliSci or take the American Govt Clep (free to ~$80)
Liberal Studies Upper Level (3)- take an upper level LS TECEP or DSST (~$80-$110) - possible exams Org Behavior, Substance Abuse, Fund of counseling, Vietnam War
Capstone (3)- no way around this, take the TESC course (cost varies depending on a number of factors but around $700-$1300)
LS lower level (3)- move one of your LS free electives over. (free)
Free electives (about 7 credits?) take TEEX or ALEKs courses (about $20)

I agree, I would ask them to move your course(s) first, to make sure that everything is in the correct place. THEN, you can plan the rest of your degree. Email them at academicadvising@tesc.edu - put your degree program in the subject line, and include your TESC ID#.
