Excelsior math -need recs for a non-math person - CM1999 - 03-30-2023

Any recommendations on a math course for someone who has issues retaining math knowledge and is pretty math-phobic.

This is for the BA in Lib Arts from Excelsior

I did mine a million years ago through Aleks...does anyone know if they still take that?

I think they still accept ALEKS, but that's no longer the easiest option. I think the CSM Learn course works. Or, failing that, take College Algebra from Sophia. It'll be way easier/quicker than ALEKS and is pretty easy - even for those who are math phobic. Intro to College Math at Sophia might also work.

I believe that Excelsior will accept the CSM Learn course. If so, I *highly* recommend it. I'm a total math phobe and was able to get through the CSMLearn course with little problem in a weekend of concentrated effort. Learned a lot also.

But confirm with Excelsior that they'll accept it as a math credit. I ran into an issue where they wouldn't accept mine simply because I'd taken it before they signed the credit acceptance agreement with CSMLearn. Even though it was the exact same course, and somebody from CSMLearn even contracted them to try to fix it, they wouldn't budge. And COSC accepts it (or used to), but not as a math credit, which sort of defeats the point. But I believe this is only a problem for folks who took it before the agreement.

Outside of CSM, I know some folks have had luck with a business mathematics course, but again, check with Excelsior and get something in writing before you take the course.

I would send everything you have to Excelsior and see if they'll accept the ALEKS courses you've taken, as long as it was completed when they had ACE recommendation for credit and they accepted it at that certain date, you should be good. Failing that, as mentioned, I would also suggest the Sophia.org option, you can email your academic advisors just to verify that it's accepted.

They will accept ALEKS, and for $20 it's a good option (although not the easiest option).

As others have said, CSM Learn should work.

And here's what it says on Sophia's page: Introduction to College Mathematics >> MAT 101 Math for Everyday Life 3
