TESC Order of Math ALEKS/CLEPS
#1
In a previous post Jennifer/cookderosa posted: (Thanks Jennifer!)

"You can get full credit for ALL of the following with no overlap/loss/duplication:

3 ALEKS intermediate algebra
6 CLEP college math
3 ALEKS college algebra or ALEKS algebra w/trig or CLEP algebra (choose 1)
3 ALEKS precal or ALEKS trig or CLEP precal (choose 1)
3 ALEKS stats (any one stats class) or DSST stats exam
3 CLEP calculus"

Is there a certain order these must be taken in for them all to count?

Thank!!!

It shouldn't matter especially since it is transfer credit. Take them in whatever order you wish, you may in the case of ALEKS want to start out low (Intermediate Algebra) first and build on it since some of the content builds in the same way, otherwise you'll be fine.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Take them in the order shown except for stats which you can take anytime. Why? In the off chance that somewhere down the road you transferred into a college that DOES have the sequence policy. There are colleges that enforce nothing lower can be taken after a higher class, so you are ensuring no future problems. The big 3 have no such policy.

I'm guessing you're in a higher math now and wonder about going back?

Also, math builds. It wouldn't make any sense to complete Intermediate algebra after precalculus. Follow them in order for your own benefit, too!

Am I the only one who things Precalculus and Trig should both count as separate credits?? Totally different Tongue

Yes Jennifer wondering about "going back". My DD has completed ALEKS Int Alg and College Alg and looking at starting ALEKS Pre-Calc. Honestly she was scared of the College Math CLEP, basically the time limit. Now we are wondering is she should bite the bullet and take the College Math CLEP for the credits-if possible.

THANKS!

That's what I figured. Well, seriously, don't worry about it. College math comes in under algebra anyway, so it's moot. If she lands at a school that requires sequence, they simply won't count it. However, many colleges don't count ALEKS, and in that case she'd get to keep her CLEP and her ALEKS would be out. BUT, she doesn't HAVE TO take the CLEP exam. She can keep working ALEKS and finish out with stats.

Not that this is the case with your DD, but with my DS, I'm really pushing him to pass the exam since I believe he relies too heavily on his notes and not enough is stored in the brain Smile In fact he did NOT pass that exam first attempt, so he's finished with all the ALEKS maths (not stats yet) and I'm going to have him go back and do it. There is a tiny bit of stats/probability on college math, so as long as you're not worrying about the order, might as well do it at the end.

If your "DD" (?) has done well on Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra on ALEKS, she should have no problem with CLEP College Math. It's considerably easier than Precalculus.

Do you think all schools consider Aleks transfer credit? So it's not counted toward that 30 credit maximum for testing out?(My community college has a 30 credit maximum for test credit)

Thank you everyone for your responses! I truly appreciate it.

The way I see it, ALEKS is a kind of course, not really a test. It just happens to be an online, very cheap course (like straighterline but cheaper). So I think it's reasonable to assume most schools would accept it in addition to testing credits, but check with your school directly
