Study.com Algebra or WGU?
#1
Hey guys,

I havent done any math work for literally 30 years. I am struggling through the algebra 101 class on study.com...mainly because I have no one to take me through the issues I might have and Study.com takes forever to get back to me. Would I be better off taking this and statistics at WGU? At least there you have a professor to help.

Thanks!

I did SDC's College Algebra course (because TESU treats it as intermediate algebra) and didn't find the course to be that great. You may be better off looking for another option, such as Sophia if that works for your plan.
TESU Class of 2024 BSBA-CIS+GM, BSIT, ASNSM-CS+Math, AAS-GEN
Earned credits from Sophia, SDC, ASU ULC, TEEX, Microsoft, Strayer, TESU, Saylor, DSST, CLEP, CompTIA, StraighterLine, and others since starting in April 2020

Thank you for your reply. May I ask what you mean by not finding it to be that great?

Sophia is probably easier. And with Sophia math courses, each one includes something like 10 hours of tutoring.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

The content quality wasn't high, and I often found myself confused and guessing.

Basically, max your transfer credits... I suggest taking everything you can transfer through Sophia.org and only take the classes you can't transfer at WGU. Having said that, if you're looking to learn the subject more, and you have the energy/time (possibly cash too if you go past the term), you can decide on doing the classes at WGU.

I am finding that with Statistics. I have to keep going off and finding other explainations on youtube.

Perhaps Sophia is the way to go?

For people starting off, I get them to do the Sophia.org/Study.com combo... so, that means to get the Sophia.org classes done first, then move to Study.com afterwards and take classes that are not available at Sophia.org... When I reviewed your other thread, you mentioned you've taken 24 classes from Study.com, that's a bit excessive for general education/electives and area of study as you want to max the credits from Sophia first and take classes you can't find on Sophia.org elsewhere.

I only have three courses to finish before I transfer in. I just need to know the difference between the study.com algebra or doing it at WGU.

I've taken some math courses at wgu and although they take you through step by step, I was glad I had some math knowledge going in. For what it's worth, any math course that gives you multiple choice options is bullsh!t. Because you can mostly plug the answers into the problem and work things backwards, then you can avoid doing most of the math. If I were you, I would transfer in the math even if I had to make a 3 month stop at a community college. All of these competency based math courses have been a no go for me, including WGU, and I've had to bite the bullet and take the course in a traditional classroom setting. I ran into a lot of headaches with wgu's math stuff. Again, I personally would recommend considering taking what you need at CC and transfer it in if math is that bad for you. At the CC you'll get the time you need to figure things out, and most CC have student and professors filling the tutoring hours, so you don't have to torture yourself trying to interpret the math textbook. In lieu of all that, take it with sophia and hire a tutor. Maybe pay your kid a couple bucks to help explain things.
