I watched every episode growing up in Scotland - Tom Baker being my favorite at that time, but since they brought the show back to life in the 2000's my favorite Doctor is David Tennant, followed by Christopher Eccleston and Matt Smith. I saw some pictures of Peter Capaldi on set and his getup looks pretty spiffy.
In the UK Dr Who is an institution, not just a TV Show
I also love the Torchwood spinoff with Captain Jack. If you make it to the UK on your vacation you should plan a trip to the Dr Who Museum in London and the Dr Who Experience in Cardiff.
