Not wanting to hijack this thread, may I just say that your sister-in-law should know better BECAUSE she is in HR. If she doesn't know the difference between a regionally accredited degree and a non-accredited "write-away" diploma, then she needs further training HERSELF.
Furthermore, if she IS aware of the difference between the two, she has no business trying to make you feel bad. A good HR person builds up rather than pulls down; encourages rather than discourages; increases self-esteem rather than lowering it.
If I were her boss, I would give her a good talking to.
