Which CUNY school are we talking about? CUNY is a system of community colleges, senior colleges, graduate/professional schools, and an honors college. Some CUNY schools are better than others. In particular fields of study, some CUNY schools are better than others.  To be honest, most CUNY senior colleges, where one would earn a 4-year degree, are regional or podunk. They don't have national reputations let alone global reputations. John Jay is known for criminal justice, and that's about it.

CUNY has the upper hand because it's traditional, and TESU is non-traditional. It makes more sense to go to CUNY when it's cheaper, but it is not world-renowned. I'm in the U.S., but hardly anyone in my region is familiar with CUNY schools outside of John Jay.

If you look at the original post and the flow of discussion, we have been discussing CUNY SPS. However, I mentioned CUNY as whole when it comes to the resources, opportunities and networks. None of what the OP is talking about has to do with a global reputation. 


Yes, certain CUNY campuses are known for a specific departments. Actually, John Jay is top #4 for Criminal Justice programs in the US. To be honest, you don't have adequate knowledge about CUNY to form an opinion and it shows. TESU or any of the big three that the mods push on here is nowhere near world-renowned in terms of rankings. CUNY may not be world-renowned. But, CUNY would be much closer than any of those schools. CUNY does create opportunities for their students to attend ivy league and top programs abroad. CUNY has a plethora of students at Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, Columbia and other world-renowned institutions. How many students has TESU or WGU sent to top graduate school programs? (Harvard Extension School doesn't count.) How many students from TESU or WGU are CEOs or senior leaders of start-ups companies worth more than 1 million? 

No, it has nothing to do with non-traditional or traditional educational experiences. CUNY SPS is very non-traditional compared to other CUNY campuses. Mainly because it is designed for working adults with some life experience. I digress. Back to what the OP asked, CUNY SPS is a better option for them because they accept more credits from various means, 109 to be exact. They get access to an affordable education (For the online degrees only, tuition is the same no matter the residency.) for less than $7k. If they qualify for fin aid, it's mostly likely free depending on their personal circumstances. Lastly, they have access to employment opportunities, internships, networking opportunities across the CUNY system. 

You say your region, but where is your region? and who cares what you think? The only person I care about having an opinion about my degree is HR professionals, senior managers and grad school admission members. Also, FYI I got into Columbia for their Technology Management program. But, I liked the USF program better because my employer pays for MBA programs and it's fully online.

If the OP attends CUNY SPS and puts forth the effort in their professional development, I am confident many doors will be open to them, now and in the future.

Um...I did follow the conversation, and multiple people mentioned that CUNY is world-renowned. It's not. There's no reason to get offended over it. Even you admit that it's not world-renowned. Someone asking a question shouldn't be misled to believe that CUNY is world-renowned. There are many reasons to choose CUNY SPS over TESU, but high rankings or a global reputation isn't one of them. Additionally, you were the only person to mention CUNY SPS almost 1.5 years after the original post was made. Considering that the last comment prior to yours was made in September 2020, you weren't even part of the original discussion. 

You are right. Only HR and hiring managers matter. That means your opinion regarding TESU does not matter. We're comparing podunk city colleges with a podunk state university. Hiring managers won't care. CUNY will just be more familiar in the New York area. 

Congrats on getting into Columbia SPS...I guess. It has a much higher acceptance rate (about 67%) than the other schools/departments/colleges at Columbia University. It's just a tad bit harder to get into than Harvard Extension. 

You don't seem to know very much about graduate admissions. I earned my bachelor's degrees from TESU, earned my first master's degree from a no--name university, and I got into a top PhD program that has a lower acceptance rate than Columbia SPS. As I mentioned earlier, I also eventually earned a master's degree at a Top 30 university that is actually world-renowned after getting into the PhD program. An admissions committee will look at GPA, graduate test scores, letters of recommendations, and essays. Sometimes, they will factor in the difficulty of the courses you selected at the undergraduate level. 

When it comes to a ranking that hiring committees actually look at for hiring criminal justice professors (U.S. News), John Jay is ranked #15. That's still a high ranking, and I also stated earlier that John Jay is known for criminal justice. Everywhere else in the CJ field, which is a field I worked in for over a decade, no one cares about school ranking. When I worked in mental health, no cared about school ranking. When I got hired as a data analyst, no one cared about school ranking. When I worked in taxation, no one cared about school ranking. If you're trying to get into a Big 4 accounting firm, then neither CUNY nor TESU will give you a leg up because neither one is ranked high for accounting.
