I also suspect that the proctor is full of shit as far as the rules you were told and an escalated contact should be able to solve that. My desk is right next to an 8 foot sliding glass door, with a window on the other side of the desk. The proctor had no problem with that.
I have the email addresses I used to get my problem resolved. PM me and I'll send them to you. (I don't want to publish them publicly out of respect for these people.)
If that's the case I was wrong 100%. Always look for the next person in charge and escalate the issue.
