Based on the information in this New York Post report, it seems likely an official with the National MS Society did unjustly railroad out the 90-year-old volunteer. Nothing this describes about her communication was offensive. I hope the society reaches out to her gracefully and apologetically and they can reconcile.
But this also seems like the sort of SNAFU that happens with or without "DEI policies." A 90-year-old volunteer could be railroaded out for miscommunication about an "email policy." That's not a reason not to have any "email policy."
The other side of the coin is that there are people out there involved with MS who use pronouns you or I wouldn't guess, and the fact that the National MS Society has a policy that supports chosen pronouns can be expected to make it less likely someone will unjustly railroad them out.
