So, Dr. Ferreira joined last night's Alumni Association Board meeting. The takeaways that matter here:
1. They are proposing that programs with majors will have a 30 credit in-house requirement in keeping with NECHE's standards.
2. But, because NECHE has grandfathered in the Bachelor's degree in General Studies with its wide variety of concentrations as not subject to this standard, this program will not change. In this program, one will continue to be able to transfer in up to 114 credits and take only the Cornerstone and Capstone courses.
3. The reason they're persnickety about non-collegiate sources of credit is that their faculty have reviewed them and reported that a lot of those courses are of dubious quality. They're trying to accept as many as they can without including courses that are too easily gamed, to avoid COSC's reputation being degraded. It's not a purposeful move away from accepting alt-credit.
I was a 114'er in my time, so I had gone into the meeting loaded for bear, but I left happier than I arrived, and I believe that COSC's leadership is listening and trying to thread a challenging needle.
