I recently joined. It is still $95 for a lifetime membership. I won’t repeat a lot of what was already said. But, I will add that the discounts are no longer through Abenity. Now they are through BenefitHub. It’s pretty typical discount offerings if you have something like this already through work/school.
I am a sucker for “fluff” so I actually signed myself up. Although they do say it is “invite-only”, it’s really NOT. It might be invite only if you want to join your school’s chapter, but you can join the online chapter yourself. I have been going through all the steps to induction. I just have to do the three SNT meetings. If you are looking for cords, etc to wear at graduation, you might not want to join on your own. For me, my school does NOT have an NSLS chapter, and is not recognized at commencement.
In comparison to another “honor society” that I joined, they DO actually offer you something for your annual fee, if you utilize it. I joined another one a while back - Omega Nu Lambda. That offered absolutely NOTHING for the money.
So, for me - NSLS was worth the price. I like what I see so far.
As for the trips, I think they are a FANTASIC opportunity for some people. Especially young adults who might not have any idea what to do or enough life experience to plan this type of trip. A group trip gives them the opportunity to explore in a little more controlled environment with a network to lean on while away from home.
