Credit for ALEKS Corp (McGraw Hill) Online courses in College Algebra & Statistics

This is a good thread. I found out about Aleks here and the program has taught me a lot. The best part is that some have gotten college credit with it. But I'm confused and hoping Annegirl or any forum members familiar with aleks Introduction to Statistics might chime in. I'm not sure what posters mean by "requesting an assessment". Can you just slowly work your way around the pie chart until you reach mastery? Am I supposed to log on to my "master" account and 'request an assessment' for myself (the student)?

Does requesting an assessment just mean clicking on the next slice of the pie, and doing the initial questions? To me the initial questions in the new pie slice are like an 'assessment'. The system sort of "assesses' your starting point before it starts the teaching/testing parts of the modules in that slice.

For example, I spent 4 hours doing the "Mathematical Readiness" slice of the pie in Intro to Statistics. It now says "Mathematical Readiness 19 of 19". Some of the individual modules in the math readiness section say "this item is mastered" but 3 have green circles are almost but not fully filled in. Those 3 say "this item is probably mastered."

My question: Can I just slowly work my way around the pie and plug away until the blue bar is at 70%? Or am I supposed to periodically "request an assessment" also? I was hoping I could just work my way around the pie until it deemed I had 'mastered' each slice.

I sure hope my post here makes sense--4 hours statistics and probability calculations has made me brain dead.

I haven't even gotten to the hard part of statistics yet, but I was proud of getting the "19 of 19 on math readiness" after 4 hours of doing problems. I'm hoping there isn't going to be some big assessment test or comprehensive final exam on all the sections of the pie to pass at the end.

You need to get 70% or more on an assessment (is your "blue bar" needs to be 70%) You will get this through an assessment. ALEKS usually triggered an assessment for me after I had gone through about 12-13% of the modules. It's really not a good idea to request many assessments in a row. If you spend your time on the modules you will get through the info faster. You can take as many assessments as you want and it won't hurt you. It would just probably be a waste of time if you're missing the same subjects over and over. As far as I know the amount of time you spend on the assessment has no impact on your percentage.

Also, you want to be really careful on assessments to make sure your answers are correct. If they aren't you will get modules back, sometimes you will get several if they are all interrelated. This really killed me in Intro to Stats. I spent 2 days trying to get past 69% because I kept making errors in the assessments.

Once you have gotten 70% or more you will need to setup an account through ACE and request the ALEKS course through them for credit.
