Thanks for your help!
The list of recommended books can be found here: Mathematics - Textbook Integration . They are absolutely not necessary. For us they are a nice extra.
Sometimes looking something up in a book or taking time to read a chapter will clear up confusion. Neither my son or I is in any hurry to finish quickly, so we may take a different approach than those that are just trying to get math credits done as quickly as possible. I think I am done with all of my math credits (still waiting for it to be official from APU), but this is my son's first college credit. In the past when we have used online math programs we have regretted not having a book to refer back to when we have moved on to the next level. For the few dollars, averaging around $5, that we paid for the textbooks used on Amazon it is worth it for the extra reference material for us. I choose to buy mostly the ones written by Lial because I knew them to be good, but really just plug in the different available titles in Amazon and figure out what is cheapest if you want a book for extra reference.
Oh, as far as I can tell ALEKS cannot link them in an independent/homeschool account. I didn't press the issue because it seemed like a waste of energy when it is so easy to just look up a topic using the book's index.
