A 2011 spending bill poised to win approval in New Jersey's legislature abandons Gov. Chris Christie's proposal to merge Thomas Edison State College into Rutgers University. Officials of Thomas Edison, an online institution that disproportionately educates underrepresented students and veterans in the state and beyond, had aggressively opposed the idea as creating a bad fit with Rutgers, a largely residential research university. "We are pleased that the governor and legislative leaders have had a chance to rethink the proposal, preserving the autonomy of a highly regarded, unique institution geared exclusively to adult learners," Darryl G. Greer, CEO of the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities, said in a news release. The final budget legislation would also shrink the size of a proposed cut in the Educational Opportunity Fund, a need-based grant program.
