I must say, like many others here I have been able to just use short-term memory to pass many of these testing-out courses via CLEP and DSST. Without question, ALEKS has been the one mechanism by which I was forced to have some material entered into longer term memory and forced to understand process. Any instructor who comments against it is not familiar with it and its thoroughness. As per "grades" versus "credits" that is an institutional decision. TESC has opted to go the easier route and apply a "CR" basis for testing out options. Many schools will go further and apply a grade basis the recommended score of a specific exam.
Frankly, I wish ALEKS had higher level mathematics as content because I enjoy learning math. I'm sure (or hopeful) over time they will expand their offering.
One other things I'd offer up is, Youtube and ItunesU have quite a bit of content on almost all subject areas. Spending some time to learn how to use these two is well worth the effort.
