18 credits for Arts & sciences - Which one's to pick
#1
I need 18 credits towards Arts and science in EC(including 3 in Ethics). Having hard time deciding which are the courses. I prepared for Principles of Marketing very hard but advisor told me this is not an Arts and sciences course. So, can you please suggest some of the easy ones I can take ?

Why don't you look into the following:

- CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature
- CLEP Social Sciences & History
- CLEP American Literature
- CLEP Humanities

They are all 6 credit exams at Excelsior. I'm my opinion...A&I Lit and Social Science & History weren't too bad. I've done both with minimal study. I haven't yet taken American Lit and Humanities but I will be taking them for my degree.

You could also check out the following:

- CLEP Introductory Sociology
- CLEP Introductory Psychology
- DSST Criminal Justice (heard from others this wasn't too hard)

These are worth three credits. I've taken Sociology and Psychology and they were relatively easy. I used mostly IC for both exams. If you haven't already...sign up for IC so you can have access to the flashcards and the Specific Exam Feedback section.

BTW...if you still need any math credits...Check out ALEKS (www.aleks.com). It's only $20 a month and you can take as many courses as you want within that time frame. I wouldn't consider this "easy"...but if you are pretty good at math...this route should be a breeze.

Hope this helps.

I am kind off leaning towards theee and include some you mentioned:

CLEP Social sciences & History
CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting literature
Natural science
Intro to American gov
I am good at Math but not sure if they are counted as Arts and sciences. I want to take Statistics. Aleks offers it but don't see any reference of which course from Aleks are accepted at EC.

Welcome to the forum!

To add to Marshall’s good advice -

You can look in the Student Guide to Credit by Exam for which CLEP/DSST are Arts and Science exams.

https://www.excelsior.edu/pls/portal/doc...atalog.pdf

Arts & Sciences is the same as the General Education categories – Humanities, Social Science/History, Natural Science/Math.

Applied Professional are more like free electives and do not count as Arts & Science.

There are several 6 credit CLEP exams.

Do you need any upper-level credits? There are several 3 credit DANTES exams, which are upper-level.

Make sure that the exams you choose do not duplicate credits that you already have.

Yes, ALEKS Stats is math (Arts & Science) and counts as upper-level credit, if you are in the Liberal Studies program.

Hi Jeff,

EC should accept any ACE approved courses from Aleks. On my transcript they applied all my math classes (including stats) as arts and sciences in the math area. Math is kinda the "original science" I think.

I am in agreement with Marshall's recommendations but then I always am! Big Grin

Analyzing and Interpreting Lit should be a relatively easy 6 credits. I didn't take SS&History so can't comment on that 1.

1 question I have for you - do you need to be concerned at all with upper level vs lower level credit? If so, all the credits we have discussed so far are lower level with the exception of stats. EC awarded me UL credits for stats.

Best to you,
Kelly

Thanks guys. Yes I only need lower level credits. Does anyone have a link to what ALEKs courses are accepted by EC and how credits are awarded. Say for example if I take Statistics will it be towards Arts and sciences and how many credits ?

Since you like Math, here is another thought -

I know that ALEKS Statistics is being awarded 3 upper-level credits for Liberal Studies at Excelsior.

Also, look at the College Math CLEP for 6 credits.

You can have a total of 3 courses in math below the level of calculus for credit. The math CLEP, 1 ALEKS, and ALEKS Stats would give you 12 credits, including 3 upper-level. Plus it would count as a depth in Math. (Thanks to TMW2010 for this great idea!)
[Update: Statistics does count as math, but it does not count toward the 3 courses below calculus policy. Statistics through ALEKS counts as upper-level credit, and can be used to fulfill a depth in math.]
[Update: College Math CLEP (6 credits) counts as 2 courses below the level of Calculus. Three levels of math through ALEKS (9 LL credits) plus Statistics through ALEKS (3 UL credits) would be the least expensive way to complete a depth in Math.]

Jeff, this is assuming that you have no math credits already and that you do not need Arts & Science (Gen Ed) credits in any particular category.

As far as I know, Excelsior accepts all of the courses at ALEKS that have a * (asterisk) next to them in this list. Just remember that they do not give credit for more than 3 math courses below the level of calculus.

Actually, I found this link for courses accepted by ACE. ACE Credit Courses

NAP - I do need Art and sciences in Ethics(2) and Discrete Math(3). I don't think ALEKs offers anything for Discrete Math(Any other suggestions?). Ethics -I am taking at Penn. But, I already have lots of math- precalculus, calculus, calculus II. So, I don't know if ALEK will help me.

Well, Aleks will help with Stats but maybe not the others. What degree plan are you pursuing? Computer science? I don't have any suggestions for Discrete Math unfortunately.

As to the other Arts and Sciences credits, if you take SS&H, A&I Lit, Stats, that equals 15 credits. So, you only need 1 more test. From what I've heard Amer Govt can be a tricky one - although I don't have any experience with it first hand. Sociology is an "easy" one that is Arts/Sciences credit you might want to consider. Just a thought.
