Is there a free option? I thought I had read you could do some stuff for free without getting credits, however the sign up seems to be a 5 day trial and then only pay options?

There is no free option. There are different levels, and you can do the cheapest option, but it doesn't get you any credits. Only the most expensive option gives you the 2 exams a month. The rest are just for studying.

can you use a coupon as a current study.com user or only as a new user? I couldn't find a way to input my coupon for the monthly payment plan, so I began paying at full price

Yeah, like dfrecore said, there are three plans and they are all pay options. ($50/month to $200/month)

You should know there is an Academic Awards page. There are a bunch of $500 scholarships and a Computer Science one worth $1,000. It can't hurt to apply.
