Admissions to YourPace UMPI - International students
#1
Hello everyone
I am considering doing a bachelor degree in business or history at UMPI.
I think however that I might run into some problems with the admission requirements, and would therefore like to ask some questions to the forum members.
Just a few facts about my educational background. I am located in a north european EU country, and have already completed a bachelor degree 10+ years ago. English is not my first language, and my completed degree was not taught in english.

Under the admission requirements at YourPace it states the following:

1. International transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES- or AICE-endorsed agency and sent from the agency directly to UMPI.

Will it be sufficient to just send them documents of a completed bachelor degree translated to english through WES - World education services? Or do they also require proof of a high school diploma? My problem is that my high school diploma was completed 20 years ago, and I am not sure that the documents are digitally stored any where retrievable.

2. International students are required to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a TOEFL (71 IBT / 197 CBT / 530 PBT minimums) or IELTS (6.0 minimum) score. Students can obtain a waiver for this requirement if they come from an English-speaking country or have successfully completed a credit-bearing, college-level written/spoken English course (ESL courses do not fulfill this requirement). Documentation of English proficiency must be received by the appropriate document deadline.

I have so far completed English composition 1 at Sophia, and I am taking English composition 2 at Sophia currently. Will this be sufficient for obtaining a waiver for this condition? Or do I need to complete the TOEFL no matter what?

Thank you for your time.

If you University transcript has > 60 US credits, they will not require your high school transcript/diploma.
From the information I gathered, UMPI used to allow International students to waive English requirements if they have an English course on the transcript or take the Sophia ENG101.
However this has changed since the recent cohort, they now require all International student to submit standard English Test result. But they also accept Duolingo (min. 95).

Update me if you are advised otherwise Smile

WES is the evaluator that UMPI has preferred in the past. If they determine that you have completed a bachelor's degree, then you won't need your high school diploma.

If one has any degree - associate, bachelor, etc., then the high school transcript is waived. Some students have been waived with 60 college credits. Some have not. Being international can change this because of the difficulty of getting high school transcripts from overseas. Even many US students who are older struggle to get a high school transcript. I've been there. I graduated almost 30 years ago. My transcripts are in a box in storage. It is a nightmare asking for them.

I would contact UMPI directly and ask about the English waiver requirements. This seems to vary as well. Shea handles admissions for YourPace and should be able to answer all of these questions.

Thank you for replying, it is much appreciated. And I will make sure to update you once i get in contact with UMPI. Smile
My degrees do not contain > 60 US credits, as they were completed in my home country. I have however completed more than 60 ACE credits through Sophia. Including at least one lab science from Study.com, I expect to complete about 100 ACE credits before enrollment.

Is this sufficient, or do they demand residential US credits?

If I take the 49$ english proficiency test at Duolingo, and score at least 95% on the test, will this be sufficient proof of language competency?

UMPI requires every student to complete a minimum of 30 credits at UMPI. Some majors have additional requirements. Like I said, reach out to YourPace admissions about the English waive requirements.

Hi , sorry for the confusion, by > 60 US credits I mean equivalent.  So for European credits if you have 120 ECTS you should be fine. But you need to have them evaluated by WES.

and for Duolingo it's not 95%,  it's a score of 95 , which is roughly equivalent to TOEFL 70~80

Yes I am aware that a student has to complete at least 10 courses at UMPI, and that most of them need to be upper level.
I have 2 specific questions:

1. Do I need to provide a high school diploma translated to english, or is it enough if I can document that I have completed at least 60 ACE credits?

2. Is it sufficient if I complete the Duolingo english test and get a score of at least 95%, or do I need to take a Toefl or some other similar test?

Thank you for clarifying, It is a score of 95.
So if I understand you correctly, ACE credits are not sufficient? I need to have my bachelor degree evaluated by WES?

You should contact the YourPace admissions with these questions so you can get the most up to date information.

You already have a bachelor's degree and you need to have that evaluated by WES. If they consider it to be a bachelor's degree, then you will be waived from the GEC and the general electives for the BA degrees. The waivers for the BLS are a bit different. And no you do not need to complete the majority of the UL's at UMPI for the BA degrees. For the BLS degrees, the majority of the 24 UL credits outside of the minor must be completed at UMPI. This is completely different than the BA degrees.

If the past, TOEFL has been UMPI's preference. They have become more open to other exams.

About the 60 credits and high school diplomas, contact YourPace admissions! I have said this over and over. Being an international student things are a bit different. You also have a bachelor's degree. That would waive the high school diploma requirement. And no 60 credits ACE credits has not been enough to waive the high school diploma requirement for all students. This is why I keep saying to contact YourPace admissions. You can email Shea these questions and she will guide you through the process.

Ok, thank you for your thorough answer. I did not know there was a difference between the BLS and BA as to the upper level requirements. I suppose I need to get a WES evaluation very soon.
If I get a waiver for the general education and general elective requirements it wont make much of a difference, as I have already completed about 25 Sophia courses, and in the GEC only need to complete English comp 2, HUM 103 Creative thinking and the lab science at Study.com.

I will email Shea these questions in the near future. Do you by any chance have her email address? I do not want to contact an enrollment specialist just now, as they will try to push me to enroll asap.

Shea is not part of the enrollment specialists. Once you apply to UMPI, those dreadful enrollment specialists will contact you. You do not have to talk to them or respond to their emails.
