I am planning on taking Excelsior's American Dream exam. Has anyone had a good experience with it? I have taken 9 (4 upper) DSST, 4 CLEP, and 1 Excelsior exam (Research Methods in Psychology). I got an A on the Excelsior exam and thought it was really easy, but of course it was multiple choice questions, not essays.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Go in and do a Search at top. There have been a few posts by individuals, overall the concensis (if I remember correctly) is that it is HARD. There does not appear to be an Exam Specific Forum for this particular thread, and IC does not have cards on this at this time that I could find. If there was only one thread, I would have copied and pasted it into this as a link, but I saw a few references.

My suggestion is to purchase the EC practice exam if they offer one for this exam. I have done that with all 3 of the ECE's I have taken and they have been well worth the money! I personally don't like the EC study guides, so if you can find someone who has taken this exam get their feedback! Good luck!

Doable? Yes..
Worth it? Everything I've read is a resounding "No"
I've spent the last few days researching it myself.. The end conclusion is that unless I absolutely "HAD" to take this one, I'd pretty much do every other exam instead.

Given how poorly worded and minimally defined ECE's multiple choice questions are, I would be weary of taking an essay exam with them. The content of the exam sounds interesting, but my conclusion when I was considering this exam was that it is a course I would have prefered to have more intructional guidance on.

I was sorely tempted to do this one because it would have satisfied the remainder of my history major requirements. But my goal is to make all A's, and, after reading what people here had to say about American Dream, I couldn't imagine how to do sufficient preparation within a reasonable amount of time and feel confident of making an "A." So I opted for two EC courses instead. Still not sure I did the right thing, but the risk seemed too great.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. I read every single piece they recommended and knew them all so well that when I got to the testing center, I made a list of them from memory on the scratch paper (there are about 75) with their corresponding author, so that I can could easily see my choices to reference for each question and document them properly. I studied for this exam far longer than any other and still made a B.
Unless you are a terrific essay writer and a speed reader, or you aren't shooting for As, I would skip it. Even for 6 credits, the work to reward ratio isn't worth it. On the other hand, I now consider myself an expert on early American history
