I'm taking the American Literature CLEP test in a week and have been studying for it the past two weeks. My University requires the optional essay in order to pass this exam, and I haven't seen any feedback as to what types of prompts are included on the essay portion. The CLEP college board website only states that there will be two essays: "For the first essay, a common theme in American literature and a list of major American authors are provided. Candidates are asked to write a well-organized essay discussing the way that theme is handled in works by any two of those authors. For the second essay, candidates are asked to respond to one of two topics-- one requiring analysis of a prose excerpt. In each case, the specific poem or prose excerpt is provided and questions are offered for guidance."
Given that there are many themes in American literature and it seems there is only one that will be given, is there anyone that has had to take the essay portion of this test and what kind of themes have been used?
I appreciate any and all feedback.
Moved from specific feedback section.
