Any language degrees?

So an online or test-only degree for either a BA in Foreign Language, Interpretation/Translation isn't really possible?

Yes it is def possible, you may have to take some literature courses to satisfy the degree requirements at TESU or COSC. You may also pursue a BS/BA in Liberal Arts from Excelsior with a Focus in French. The Focus will be displayed on your transcript.

An online degree might be possible but each school would have specific requirements that could take 1-2 years or longer. With foreign language degrees some of the courses would have to be taught in the foreign language, which might be hard to find. Most online programs typically require at least 30 credits be taken at the school. A degree in interpretation/translation might be easier to complete online but there might be limited options. TESU offers a foreign language degree but has very specific requirements that would have to be transferred in and some of the requirements might not have too many options, would most likely require semester based courses. For a liberal studies degree or similar broader degree you could use proficiency tests to earn credit which would satisfy humanities, gen ed or free electives.

No test-out available, but you'd have to do the research on the online degree; I'm sure there are some out there, but we don't know every degree possible in every one of the 2500+ schools in the country.

Just google it and start searching, you'll find plenty of stuff.

Okay, will research more into this.

Would anyone know where there is a starter resource about the basics of how all of this works? I have been searching but am having difficulty finding something like this.

Oh, and thanks a lot for all of your help!

Empire State College has similar transfer policies as the big 3 but requires a certain number of credits be taken through the school. The degrees are similar to liberal studies and are very flexible but the names are a bit different with an area of study and then a create your own concentration. Finding the required courses might still be challenging, though there would be some flexibility in the courses chosen.

Johann Wrote:I just don't see how being fluent in a language is going to shorten the degree path all that much. Most of us here are fluent in English - but it would still take us a long time and a lot of courses to earn a degree in English. Here in bilingual Canada, the same applies to those who speak French - or both languages. If you major in a language, you're expected to study its history, derivation, literature etc. That's the major thrust of the coursework. To enter a language degree program, you may be required to have several years of pre-university training in the language. If you're a native speaker, you may have an advantage going in, but you'll still have to jump through the same hoops as everybody else, credit-wise and course-wise. Grammar and style may come easier to you than others, but you'll still have to pass the courses and earn the credit. What went on with the language in the seventh-or-seventeenth century is probably as easy/difficult for you to learn as everyone else in class -and will take the same amount of time.

The good news. Languages get easier as you go along. Your fifth will take you about half the time your second did.

Summary: You can test out of a language, as a subject. But as a major in a degree - I'd say no.

English programs are not designed like foreign language programs. While one cannot test out of all the requirements of a foreign language degree, one can get pretty close. This forum has found all kinds of hacks.

Kev Wrote:I'm completely knew to the whole earning a degree by tests/online (in a very short period of time). I have a rough understanding that it's the type of method which requires discipline and being self-organized, which are things I very much enjoy and excel at.

What brought me here and why I would be interested in getting a degree is because I need a university degree to teach overseas. There have been other situations where not having a degree has caused me issues. If I can get a degree in a year, even with hard work, I think it's worth it.

While getting a degree is good, I want it to be useful, enjoyable (something I enjoy) and something which I am interested in. What interests me the most is a BA in Foreign Language, or any degree which would be related to language, such as interpretation or translation.

Are any of these available to do in one year and by tests/online (or almost all online)?

Kind regards.

It's not possible to completely test out if a degree in foreign languages at either of the Big 3. You can earn a whole lot of credits through (ACTFL language testing) for your advanced knowledge of listening to, speaking, and writing a foreign language. However, foreign language degrees require other credits in the foreign language like literature, culture, and electives. Depending on your background, you may be able to fulfill some of those areas with portfolios. They're not for everyone, just as testing out isn't for everyone but I enjoyed the process when I earned some portfolio credits in Hispanic literature. Based on my background, I was able to demonstrate college-level knowledge.

I know this isn't testing out but those are two ways I know for earning foreign language credits.

If you only want to test out and are comfortable earning a degree in an area related to foreign language, then the cultural studies concentration at Excelsior or Humanities and Liberal Studies concentrations at TESU can put good use to the foreign language credits earned through testing.
