Any language degrees?

sanantone Wrote:I think what is being missed here is that the OP has asked about multiple majors and doesn't seem to be married to the idea of completing a foreign language or interpretation/translation degree. Since the OP specifically asked about an online linguistics program, I suggested one. The OP is also looking at programs that are not related to language. I don't know how relevant it is to say a foreign language program is not a translation program when the OP asked about foreign language. I don't know how relevant it is to say that a linguistics program does not have foreign languages when the OP asked for linguistics and may not have an interest in studying French.

Notwithstanding your comments, it seems the OP benefited from hearing about different possibilities. I didn't name a specific language - French or any other – but I did mention classes in the areas that the OP said might be of interest career-wise. The OP specifically mentioned foreign language, translating/interpreting, and teaching - not linguistics. However, I don't think Ashford's Applied Linguistics major was irrelevant. In fact, I added some details I know about the program – specifically the curriculum and format, both of which seem pretty relevant to me when discussing a potential match for the OP’s needs. Apart from wanting to help, I was always really interested in the program and was excited to share info about something that is rarely talked about on the forum.

Besides, I can’t imagine where I’d be if I only read information on this forum that I thought was relevant.

To test out your Stegner? Isn't that a NATO assault rifle? Oh, right -- that's a Steyr AUG. Like this one: https://steyrarms.com/steyr-aug-a3-m1.html .

Pardon my complete confusion, but to what "Stegner" are you referring? I'm aware of Wallace Stegner, the writer - and the Stegner Fellowship (Stanford) named after him. Anything to do with that?

sanantone Wrote:I mean, the hardest part is testing out of gen ed and free electives quickly because those two areas are almost 100 credits. The bulk of the language area of study is covered by two or three tests. The rest of the major is just three courses which anyone can complete in a semester or less. Whether or not the OP can finish in one year is independent of the major. Even if we were talking about liberal studies, which actually would require more tests for those who do not know a foreign language, it is still difficult to test out in a year. People have done it, but it takes a lot of focus and good test-taking skills.

I just don't understand why people are making a big deal out of a few courses. You don't even have to complete them as courses; they can be completed as portfolio assessments. I completed about 60 credits in less than a year (that was all I needed to finish my degree), and more than half of those credits came from semester-based courses at a community college.
We disagree on a lot generally, but I definitely agree with you here. The forum seems to be getting more averse to taking actual courses and/or standardized tests.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Has anyone been able to satisfy the Major Writers and/or Masterpieces of Literature requirement with TESU?

I have no idea where to even begin with that one!

I wasn't a foreign language major but did complete and get credit for a literature portfolio in Spanish. From what I gathered when I did a mock evaluation, it would have filled that slot. Also, I chose a syllabus (for the portfolio) for a class that had a part 1 and a part 2 so if I wanted to get three more credits, I would have done another portfolio for the part 2 class.

Another option for getting the literature credits is actually taking a class - perhaps a self-paced class at a regionally accredited college.

Portfolios and actual classes for credit are the only two ways I know to get credits for literature in a foreign language.

The ACTFL tests will yield more than the 9 lower-level credits you get with CLEP.

Chinese. This is the last requirement that I have before my liberal arts capstone.

I've never done a portfolio, but I have a feeling that may be my best option. I actually work at a Chinese school, the same school most of my chinese language credits came from... but we didn't have a course that directly translated into Masterpieces of Literature for TESU.

Any advice on pursuing the portfolio route? Is that pretty difficult?
