Associotes degree without Speech
#1
Hi all,
Does anyone know of a college that will except the majority of my community college credits that does not require a speech class? I am looking for business, but liberal arts would be fine too. I just want to get the piece of paper but this speech course is killing me as I suffer from severe social anxiety and every time I've tried to do the course I freeze in front of the whole class, so that it no longer an option. I have 54 credits and I am so close but my cc will not let me get past this speech requirement. Thanks in advance for any advice and/or tips.

You can see if your CC will accept the Public Speaking DSST exam. Or you can take it at BYU-IS, for $534. Expensive, but you don't have to do it in front of a classroom full of people.

Or you can switch to one of the Big 3, who will all take the DSST.

I've never taken speech class or the exam, and I earned an AA and BA from TESC. If I remember, I took Technical Writing DSST as my other credit.

I assume you want a degree from your cc if you can get past this requirement.

I don't know of a traditional college with a speech requirement that will let you take it either online or test out. That's why I would be careful about taking an online class for speech or to DSST out of it unless you are getting a degree from the big 3. The big 3 requires speech, but you can DSST out of it.

The only other thing I can suggest you do is to use ratemyprofessors and choose the easiest instructor. Usually, the easiest instructor's classes will be full with a wait list, so you will need to waitlist if possible and then crash it on the first day. I'm guessing crashing a class on the first day may cause anxiety issues on its own, but that's much better than choosing a hard instructor in a class with available seats.

If you haven't done this already, go to the disability services at your cc and see if they can help you to get the instructor to give you extra accommodation like give you extra time or let you do the speech during office hours.

While TESC and COSC now require a speech class (or waiver from COSC), Excelsior and the West Virginia Board of Governors AAS degree programs do not. Excelsior does require an Associate Capstone, and the WVBoG programs require 3 hours in residence.

Excelsior and the Board of Governors AAS will be the most flexible in accepting credits. If you're fine with a 15-credit residency requirement, then there are other community colleges to choose from. I believe Central Texas College only has a general speech/communications requirement. You can either take a speech course or a communications course that requires no speeches. With the out of state tuition rate, however, it would be cheaper to go with the options KayV gave or to find a CC in your state.

Here's one example, from WVU-Parkersburg:
Board of Governors Associate of Applied Science | WVU Parkersburg
They require 6 hours of Communications, which may be fulfilled by English Comp I and II, Technical Writing, etc., with no Speech class needed.

I shared more about this program in Post #15 of this thread:

If you're ok speaking without an audience, BYU Independent Study has a speech course. Public Speaking: - STDEV 150 - BYU Independent Study - Online Courses

You basically record your speech, upload to youtube and they grade it.

I'm sure there are others as well. This may be a better solution than changing programs to avoid the requirement.
Currently studying for: Still deciding.
