Should you utilize FEMA credits toward your Excelsior Business degree?
#1
Just a quick note: If you are in a Business degree program at Excelsior, don't bother doing more than 15 FEMA exams. They can only go toward the "Additional Credit Component" a.k.a. "Free Electives" a.k.a. "Applied Professional".

This 15 credit max. category is where all the additional overflow credits will go if you meet the requirements in all the other categories.

Let's say you only end up needing 3 Applied Professional credits, ask yourself if you want to pay TESC $400 for 3 credits Thomas Edison State College - Prospective Students - Undergraduate Programs - Tuition and Fees ? $180 for 3 credits at Fredrick Community College ($60/semester hr.) http://www.frederick.edu/download/progra...cation.pdf ? or maybe $30 a credit hour ($90) at Clackamas Community College CCC Criminal Justice Department - Emergency Management ?
... but wait... Clackamas gives quarter/hour credit, not semester/hour credit. So, who really knows how much 3 semester hours will cost? Is it a 2:1 ratio? Beats me. If it is, that's $180 for 3 semester hours.

I know 3 CLEP or DSST credits are about $90.

What I'm saying is that there may only be a certain range of credits you may need in order to make TESC the best choice for credit banking. Weigh it out once you know how many Applied Professional credits you are lacking and how much you will spend to get those remaining credits.

It is a judgment call between time, money, and effort involved.

It might be wise to analyze your degree plan in depth before building a stack of FEMA certificates. Smile (like SOMEONE I know... who will remain nameless... auminer49r) :o

I will begin the Excelsior College Liberal Studies curriculum. I have to get 41 professional credits. Will I be able to apply FEMA courses to all of these?

If I were to utilize FEMA , I would use the credit towards Thomas Edison State College..... They have a Bachelors for Emergency Mgmt and you can use it toward the majority of 30 credit hours from FEMA ........which is not bad considering not paying for any CLEPS or DANTES on that .....

If you were going to maximize on fema credits in the 30 credit area or whatever the max recognized is... Where would it be best applied, leaving the least "other types" of courses required to complete a bachelor, in a TESC (or EC?) Emergency Management program, or to just fill in the applied professionals in an EC Liberal Studies?

auminer49r is spot on about keeping FEMA credits to 15 for Excelsior BS Business students looking for easy elective credits. But if you do plan on using the full 15, there is a clear choice for transfer -- TESC credit bank. $400 let's you transfer to EC for $26.66 per credit or about $80 per 3 credits. That's a bargain compared to using the Frederick College option offered throught he FEMA site where those 15 credits would cost you $900.

I'm using 10 FEMA Credits towards my General Business Degree at Excelsior as Free Electives. It was a very quick way to get ten credits.

FEMA credits would definitely give you more bang for your buck in another degree program other than Excelsior's Business. ...not that they aren't a great way to get Applied Professional credits for business. There's just a 15 credit maximum. 15 credits for $400 is a GREAT deal. TESC will credit bank up to 60 credits for $400. But, if you only needed a few, it's not such a great value in comparison to the other credit banking schools listed above.

Most exam takers will benefit from as many FEMA credits as their program will allow. I took too many free-electives in a traditional school. Now I only have 1 applied professional credit to go. That was the basis behind this thread... and to caution anxious Excelsior Business students not to bother doing more than 15.Rolleyes

Hi Mike, I was referring to Business majors with this post. There are other Liberal Studies majors who are more up-to-speed with FEMA and the Liberal Studies curriculum.

someone else should take this one. Big Grin
