I wonder what the practicum would entail ?

My guess is it's similar to a bachelor's level social work practicum. You're working in some sort of human services setting, shadowing other clinical staff, doing simple intakes, that sort of thing.

I don't think I've ever seen an undergraduate psychology degree with a practicum requirement before.  This would make sense if (like the BSW) there were employment opportunities working with clients that the degree prepared you for. But as far as I know, there aren't a lot of opportunities for people with a bachelor's in psychology to actually work with clients.
I'd be interested in understanding the reasoning behind the practicum.
Thanks for the response. Is this a degree requirement or an elective ? Seems like I read somewhere on this forum that it’s not. If it’s required than It sounds like this degree may not be practical for working adults who have full time jobs.

I think it's a requirement. But the Criminal Justice degree also has a practicum requirement that can (sometimes?) be met by alternate means.

I haven't seen any of the required practicums in UMPI degrees be completed by alternate means. They usually have a specific number of hours you must be working at some capacity in the field. It's kind of like an internship.

PSY 496: Practicum
Duration: 8 weeks
Credit Hours: 3
Supervised field experience in a social service or other setting where psychology background and skills are especially useful. May be repeated for a total not to exceed six credits.

True, it can be a deterrent for those on a tight budget and schedule.  However, for those who have the extra $1400 for a session and the time to complete the practicum, it maybe the cheapest, easiest, and fastest option or a combo of these...  This reminds me of the BACJ option for YourPace, it also requires a practicum I believe.

Hello BJ hope all is well with you,I’ve been looking for an answer for this question since you pretty much have answered almost every question I’ve had but I am already enrolled at UMPI and I’m on my third semester here. My question is if you think it’s worth taking PSY 200 and PSY 235 at Study.com( Is the level of difficulty much different?) since those are the only 2 courses that I have left aside from the last 4 classes I’ll be taking this semester. I have the time to get it done since I work from home and I also plan on doing the MAOL after I graduate. Any tips on what you would do to pursue the MAOL at umpi? I don’t think any of my credits earned from the Psychology degree will transfer over to the MAOL degree program but any information would help. Thanks again for your get helpful insight and advice.

Your message is in the quotes! Anyways, you should complete at least 30 credits at UMPI, Study.com and UMPI are very similar in requirements... If you've already done that number of credits for residency, then yes, do the remaining two classes at Study.com using my coupon code if you don't already have a subscription: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid422198

In regards to the UMPI MAOL, there are 4 classes that can transfer, they will accept 3 of those 4. I am taking all 4 just in case and for learning purposes, retaining info, and to 'overwrite' the transfer credits for the GPA. Last but not least, I am doing 4 because you need at least a B+ for each one to get it transferred, just passing by with a B will not do. Obviously, shoot for the A or at least A-...
