BA of Foreign Language at TESC?
#1
Hello, fellow CLEPtomaniacs.

I am an Australian and I admit that I am wholly ignorant of the way the university system in the US works, but I have been doing some research, and I think I have a basic grasp of it now.

I see TESC allows credit through portfolio. I speak, read and write Japanese quite well. Am I correct in assuming that TESC will allow me the full 33 credits for my Area of Study if I can demonstrate my mastery of Japanese? Or am I misunderstanding what their Prior Learning Assessment is about?

Thanks in advance for your help, and sorry if this sounds like a stupid question!

Welcome to the forum!

While you are investigating your PLA options, also look at exams for credit. I believe some are offered for Japanese.

NYU, ACTFL OPI, and BYU FLATS may be options.

Here are some threads about those:

The difficult part of that Area of Study is getting enough of what we call in the US upper level credit, and for foreign language courses that means courses in which you study literature, advanced grammar, linguistics, translation or history in the language. I'd imagine a PLA would incorporate writing a number of papers in Japanese rather than just showing mastery of the language, plus a Foreign Language Area of Study/major probably requires courses in more than a single foreign language.

Just my $.02, and some things to consider as you explore further.
