BLS Project Management Degree Plan
#1
Hello everyone,

Helping a sibling out with a degree plan for this program. We chose it because we think it will be the cheapest/fastest degree they can get.

They live in California and have 12 credits from previous community college.

Here is the degree plan.

The idea is to start with the Sophia classes, first the required and then the electives. Then move on to Study.

Questions --
  • They speak fluent Portuguese but not so good at writing/reading, could they pass and use a ACTFL test?
  • What are the UL Study classes they can take? The plan requires 2, not sure how to figure out which ones.
Thank you so much everyone!

If they can speak Portuguese, they could try the listening test instead of the reading test. Both of those cost the same. The OPI/OPIc is a conversational test. No reading or writing needed. The OPIc is computer-based and is $108. The OPI has a human on the other end and is the most expensive: $165.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Thank you so much! The POI listening test sounds perfect, could you link me to it? For the life of me I cannot find it on this website.

Thank you so much!! Would the $51 listening test suffice or would they have to do one of the $100 tests? Really appreciate your help.

Any test will work, so long as they score high enough to get at least 3 credits. There is a chart here showing how much that would be: https://www.actfl.org/assessment-researc...ssessments If they are conversationally fluent, it should be pretty easy to score at least Intermediate High. That's supposed to correspond to only a couple of years of language instruction at the university level.

BTW, the descriptions for each kind of test are here: https://www.languagetesting.com/lti-info...scriptions

The exams were created by ACTFL: https://www.actfl.org/actfl-assessments/...sments/rpt

They are administered by LTI: https://www.languagetesting.com/lti/prod...ng_id/7130?

ACE recommends them for college credit: https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...Active%22)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what's available for Portuguese for the ACTFL exams:

ORAL PROFICIENCY INTERVIEW (you can only choose 1):
- OPIc (computerized) $108 OR
- OPI (live person) $165

Novice High/Intermediate Low 3cr (3cr LL)
Intermediate Mid 6cr (6cr LL)
Intermediate High/Advanced Low 9cr (9cr LL)
Advanced Mid 9cr (6cr LL/3cr UL)
Advanced High/Superior 12cr (6cr LL/6cr UL)

LISTENING PROFICIENCY TEST:
- LPT $51

Intermediate Mid/Intermediate High 3cr (3cr LL)
Advanced Low/Superior 6cr (6cr LL)

WRITTEN PROFICIENCY TEST:
- WPT $108

Novice High/Intermediate Low 3cr (3cr LL)
Intermediate Mid 6cr (6cr LL)
Intermediate High/Advanced Low 8cr (6cr LL/2cr UL)
Advanced Mid 9cr (6cr LL/3cr UL)
Advanced High/Superior 12cr (6cr LL/6cr UL)

READING PROFICIENCY TEST:
- RPT $51

Intermediate High 2cr (2cr LL)
Advanced Low/Advanced Mid 3cr (3cr LL)
Advanced High/Superior 6cr (6cr LL)

Some info on your degree plan:

1) Do both Comp I & II at UMPI
2) check to see if Acting (already taken) will fit into 2D (that's the hands-on art course, of which acting might fit)
3) if not ^, then do this at UMPI
4) Psychology (already taken) will fit into 2A & 2B
5) I think Fund Of Speech Comm (already taken) will work in 1C
6) Principles of Economics (already taken) will work in 2A & 2B (so same as Psych)
7) I would double-check to see if they will still accept Micro and Macroecon from Sophia if you've already taken Econ - they may not
8) If you're taking Portuguese, I would try to get the most credits by taking the OPIc & LPT and see if UMPI will bring those in for 18cr - if so, you should get 6cr UL and 12cr LL, which you can use in the Electives area as well as the GEC. That will mean you don't have to take more Study.com courses
9) don't take UL courses at Study.com - they are generally as much or more work than UMPI

If I were you, I would do the ACTFL OPIc exam, and then apply and send your transcripts to UMPI to see how they'll bring things in; THEN, let them know that you want to do additional courses via Sophia and Study.com, and postpone your enrollment. That way, you know in advance what things will work for. You don't want to waste time on courses you can't bring in because they duplicate, that would be frustrating.

Also, once you apply, I think you can then ask questions about things like the Econ courses, and the LPT exam.

@mohelena02, with just 12 community college credits, they can get the Pierpont BOG AAS with all the Sophia.org courses they can handle in a month or two, they're going to ladder that up to the UMPI degree anyways.  I would follow these two links below, decide if going with the Coursera/TADA (American Dream Academy) funded Google certificates and other freebies would be worth it as well...

Pierpont: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Pierpont_C%26TC
UMPI: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Pi...egree_Plan
Coursera: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Coursera
In Progress: Walden MBA | TESU BA Biology & Computer Science
Graduate Certificate: Global Management & Entrepreneurship, ASU (Freebie)

Completed: TESU ASNSM Biology, BSBA (ACBSP Accredited 2017)
Universidad Isabel I: ENEB MBA, Big Data & BI, Digital Marketing & E-Commerce
Certs: 6Sigma/Lean/Scrum, ITIL | Cisco/CompTIA/MTA | Coursera/Edx/Udacity
