What do you think about cheap online tutoring?
#1
Hi all -

I have never used a tutor, and until recently would not have considered it.  However, I have a really stubborn 10-year-old who won't take math help from anyone.   So, I cautiously looked into it thinking that I could find a discount from college students or alternative options.

What I found was that there are some REALLY COOL online tutors out there!   Did you know that you can find a tutor for as low as $4/hour on some sites? The low prices are even for tutors with advanced degrees and higher-level professionals.

I know that this could be considered a little controversial because it is outsourcing some jobs to other countries.  I'm not trying to advocate this at all.  I just wanted to mention it because we all are here trying to share ways to save money on our education.  I was able to finish my degree with the help of just the resources found here and suggested by members here.  Not everyone is as lucky, and if you've only got $20 to spend, 5 hours with an expert could actually help you make serious progress on your topic.  (And break it into 30 minutes sessions and really stretch your dime!)

We ended up finding an AMAZING tutor from Venezuela who is super enthusiastic and after one session, my 10-year-old is excited about his new-found math ability.   I'm impressed and happy that I took the risk.  And as a bonus, I'll be able to afford the tutor for as much time as is needed.

That's great news. I think it's a good investment as the return on that investment is your child's future education. If it was me, I would supplement it with extra math worksheets or even some extra materials online, at the library, and to use Khan Academy when the time comes, then there's the PatrickJMT videos (youtube videos), etc. The main thing is to get the kids interest up in the subject, then run with it!

Thanks bjcheung!   I had already tried all of these supplements, but he just wouldn't listen to me.  Now I'm letting the super cool tutor take over for a while and then we'll try to add these resources again.  I'm just thrilled that as little as $4 an hour can get you an amazing tutor.   I never would have considered!
