CLEP home proctoring issues
#21
(05-08-2023, 11:08 AM)rachel83az Wrote: How are you supposed to scan the room with a hardwired laptop? It's not always easy to find separate and suitable webcams to use for the scanning process. If you don't, though, the ethernet cord could get tangled and/or twisted around, potentially damaging your ethernet port.

Yeah I run into this issue and the proctors just do not understand it. Especially with ProctorU and other live proctoring services. They sometimes want me to show them where my phone is or take a look at something else. I do the best I can but they're often not happy with the view and refuse to understand that I cannot make it better without disconnecting them.

Ideally, you should try to be prepared for anything a proctor may throw at you. For some it may be better to use the built-in laptop camera, but others require a separate camera with an articulated stand. CLEP wants you to use a mirror - even if you have to carry your laptop to the bathroom! PeopleCert wants all the doors of the room in view of the camera for the entire test. I've also had scheduled exams cancelled on me at the last minute, and I've had proctors disappear in the middle of a test. Overall, though, I have had pretty good experiences with remote proctoring. I've read reports of abusive/intrusive/creepy proctors or tests blowing up at the last second, so I am thankful for just getting by enough to pass.

Yikes! That's geometrically impossible in some rooms. Yeah, sure, let me bend the laws of physics to make this work.

There's really no way to prepare for the idiotic things proctors throw at you. I've experienced these weirdos at LSU with Examity:

- Turn a clear glass full of water over so the proctor can see it's clear
- Turn off the ac window unit in the adjoining room because of the noise
- Tell my neighbor to stop mowing his lawn because of the noise

You don't have to have brains to be a proctor. Just a heartbeat.

When ProctorU people ask me to do something nonsensical I just demand to speak with a supervisor and the situation is magically resolved in a few minutes.

That's what I started doing with Examity or I just tell them no.

I didn't have to bend the laws of physics, exactly. I took that exam in a small room with three doors on three sides. I had to lay on the floor and contort my body to make the camera angle work, but I passed! It took me a few minutes to stand up though...

They allowed you to lay on the floor? Most proctors insist on you sitting somewhere. Usually at a desk.

That was what I was thinking too, wow. That's a first time I've read this... My weirdest was using the washroom for testing, no issues so far.

It didn't seem to matter. She was only concerned about seeing the doors and my face.

To be clear, the laptop was upright on the floor, and I was (mostly) on my belly with my face upright and pointed toward the camera, so there was no appreciable difference to sitting at a desk. However, I could see there being an issue if I were lying on my back or side.
