Can only test out of 5 classes w/ CLEP?
#1
I've been reading for awhile and I don't understand how everyone is racking up all these credits for their degree (or are they just extras?). The woman in the Learning Center at my community college told me about 2 brothers who each have 59 credits all based on this site, REA and Petersens.

I'm going for an Associate of Applied Science degree (Info Technology - Applications Professional). Looking at the sheet from my college of CLEP tests you can take to test out, I can do 5: Biology, Sociology, Human Growth & Development, Information Systems and Computer Applications, and Principles of Management. (18 credits total)

That's pretty disappointing. What are other people getting degrees in that allows them to CLEP through classes? It doesn't look like my college does DANTES, ECE, or the other acronym test on here. I've looked at their testing section and none of those other ones are listed.

For my planned major (accounting), at Kent State, I can use Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Biology for non lab science, MGMT, Marketing, Business law, the history exams to fulfill humanities requirements, etcetera!!! These clep and DSST exams fill your liberal education requirements up fast! Keep in mind I also need about 22 semester hours as free electives which can be any college level credits.
I have 18 traditional credits and 51 exam credits. I've passed Introductory Sociology 76, Introductory Psychology 68, A&I Literature 66, Principles of Marketing 76, Introductory Business Law 71, Social Sciences & History 67, DSST Drug & Alcohol Abuse 450, Biology 69, Principles of Management 70, Natural Sciences 64, Intro to Business DSST 70, Principles of Macroeconomics 67, Principles of Microeconomics 58.

It's only because your degree is AAS. When you get ready for your bachelors degree (you ARE planning that right??) you'll have to meet gen ed requirements, at which time CLEP will become your friend.
In the mean time, lets get going on your CLEPs! (p.s. even though they won't meet your current degree requirement, after you finish these 5 you should take the others in preparation for when you start your bachelor's degree!)

It really depends on the school you go to. Most B&M schools (at least here in AZ) won't let you CLEP out of more than 15 credits.

That brings up an interesting thought. I'd like to see a list of non-Big 3 schools with generous transfer allowances (e.g. 80 or more units allowed).

Maybe I can put together one someday. . . when there's time. . .

What's E.C?

Yeah, after Associates, I plan to go further. I'm a single mom working full-time, so $ and time are things I'm usually short on.

At the community college I go to, you can take as many CLEP credits you want, so long as you also do 15 credits of actual in-class. You also don't have to do the 15 in-class credits prior to doing CLEP; just so long as you do them sometime.

EC is short for Excelsior College, one of the "Big Three" Colleges.

I have never seen more than 45 outside of the big three- and I can't tell you how many colleges I have checked. Maybe 300 or more. AND, those 45 are not necessarily in anything you need LOL

You should know that you don't have to be enrolled in college anywhere to take CLEP exams. They are 100% open to any person of any age, no college necessary!
