As to BGSU_Alum_86's post, are you enrolled in a college or university? If not - and double- check this - I think that you can just take the CLEP with the essays, and not have a problem. If you [U]are[U] enrolled, I think that your college/university will want to provide a top AND grade the essays. If enrolled, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check what you read hear or hear from friends, etc. with you registrar's office, okay? Good luck.

For the first essay, you might not be given a topic to argue for or against. I was given a broad topic and told to write about one particular aspect of it.
For the second essay, it’s almost easier because you have your sources and info provided. All you do is pick a side and USE BOTH SOURCES IN YOUR ESSAY to support your side.
If you’re not enrolled in a college now (like I wasn't) your essay gets graded by College Board. Then the multiple-chioce and essay parts are equally weighted and you’re given a final grade.

These posts are spot on.
Just to add some encouragement, I totally bombed my second essay. I would have rated it a 1 out of 6, and I still passed. My first essay was proabably a strong 4. So take heart. Neither of my essays were 5x5. As you can see though, my score of 53 reflects this. But 53 still = 6 credits. woot
Good Luck

Like BIPolar Guy, my essays weren't that good, but I still received a good grade. One thing that's frequently mentioned here is citing in your second essay. It's the essay for which you're provided two Internet articles, and then asked to use them in a position piece. Check a CLEP book, or something, for ideas on citing. I don't recall doing anything special, but I passed. It was last year, but I seem to recall writing something along the lines of "In Tom Smith's article, Why People Drive Fasthe argued that they were overcompensating for deficiencies in other areas." Nothing more formal than that.

Westerner, if the OP is not enrolled in a college, they would not be taking the College Composition Modular. Also, the essays that are optional with the modular exam are never graded by College Board, and the score for this exam never reflects the grade on the essays.

OK, well my tips were referring to the regular College Comp (w/ essay). I guess the rest of the posts in here are talking about the Modular one. Just thought my tips could apply to both. Never mind the last paragraph in my above post, then.
