Coursera a bunch of new master's degrees?
#1
Question
Is it just me, or has Coursera added a bunch of new master’s degrees recently?

I don’t remember seeing this many affordable graduate options a year ago. Some of these programs are from well-known universities, and the pricing is surprisingly reasonable. Here's a list I put together in case it's helpful to others exploring Coursera Master's degrees.

Data Science & Analytics
Computer Science & Engineering
Engineering & Management
Business, IT, and Accounting
Public Health

Thoughts?
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience:  CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

Many of these are recent, but I think almost all have been noticed here or on the sister board.

Note University of Colorado Boulder’s US News subject ranking in Computer Science is #39.

Yes, the bulk of the ones that interest me are also within the $15-$20K range! These are great options from some reputable institutions, I would be on the lookout for competitive options from EdX and other MOOC and see if they offer something within that same budget range, or something you're interested in...

A very interesting program indeed! There is a one time app fee and then the additional nominal semester fees...

I honestly think the subject rankings are nonsense. Attending a school like Harvard is going to beat University of Michigan every day of the week. I cannot see a hiring manager choosing the later over the former in any scenario.

Overall I think the choice is 100% cost except for Dartmouth.

In academe a lot varies by department, field, or subfield.

I collaborated with a few people from Harvard's school of public health who thought it was great but admitted that they were not even not the number 1 school of public health in the country. That's typically Johns Hopkins, an Ivy Plus.

Not only that, they admitted their school at Harvard was not even the number 1 school of public health in Boston. That's often Boston University, an R1. BU is not an Ivy, not an Ivy Plus or Public Ivy. BU is USNews National University #41 whereas Harvard is #3. But BU is especially strong in public health.

Now, that was several years ago. This year Harvard (tied for #2) is slightly above BU (#7) in the USNews public health ranking. Still, opinions within a specialized field are going to move differently than USNews rankings, and you could doubtless find areas within public health where BU is clearly stronger than Harvard.

Speaking of Michigan, it's tied for #2 in public health with Harvard! (It's a three-way tie with Emory for #2. Johns Hopkins #1.)

Remember that USNews overall institutional rankings are based heavily on each year's traditional undergraduate class, which has little to no relationship with most activities at the graduate level even on campus let alone online.

The medical field is different and schools like John Hopkins are an exception but I would be very surprised if any medical institution turned down residents who went to Harvard.

All these ranking anyway are subjective and for someone who went to Harvard and tried to downplay their school comparing it to BU is not very bright.

Sure things vary but hiring managers are not turning down Ivy League grads for State Schools because of a USNews ranking.

Ivy and Ivy Plus school graduates can usually write their own ticket and will get hired over everyone else almost every time unless they absolutely blow the interview.

I cannot imagine being in an interview and trying to convince a hiring manager your Joe State school is better than Harvard because USNews says so. When you have to resort to selling something you already lost.

The conversation behind the scenes for hiring would go like this:

HM 1, "So Bob says he went to ..State School and USNews ranks their ...program well"

HM 2, "...yes but John went to Harvard."

HM 3, "Lets go with John he went to Harvard."

...I have been in these meetings many times.

Thank you for sharing. Several of these are interesting options. Some will allow some various “try before you buy” options. So for those who aren’t sure, you could try some of the ones that have related courses on Coursera Plus. I saw one that had some “open” courses. That’s one of the appeals of Coursera. You can earn certificates, specializations, or just sample some of the learning materials.
