DOD FY 2011 CLEP DSST Pass Rates
#11
This is pretty daunting and uplifting at the same time it kind of shows a little bit of a path on what to take, and what to challenge your self with.....

Ah, okay that makes sense. I was looking at some of the failures and shaking my head wondering why their mates hadn't passed along the tip about InstantCert. Wink

Not necessarily. Just use it as one more piece of info but don't rely on it too heavily. The general thinking is that with us military folks we have an incentive to just take the test without even studying. Speaking from the Air Force side, there is very little knowledge of the CLEPs. I mean, we know they exist, but few people really knows about the (few, sometimes very old) study guides available at the base library. In my experience, far more people talk about "just take a random test and see how you do" rather than actually studying for it.

A lot of it is inertia. You have to get fired up about doing this. If you aren't "gazelle intense" as Dave Ramsey likes to say, then these are just little extra "gimmick" tests that may get you out of one or two classes, maybe, but they are free and the classes are free so who really cares? There isn't really an incentive to study, actually. Although, retests are no longer free, so if you fail you have to pay to retake. But then, when you can just take the class for free, and none of your peers know how to study for a CLEP, and when you look for study guides and advice the ed office says "check the library" and the library says "check the ed office" then you basically throw your hands up and just take the class.

I guarantee if the military personnel taking CLEP and DSST tests in FY12 spent time here, the pass rates would shoot way up.

Also, when looking at the pass rate rate figures notice that some of the tests are calculated twice. I'm not sure if those are different versions, but I find it odd that only one or two people would take one version of a test, and hundreds of people would take the other. So when you see a really low number do a search for the test name to see if it shows up again. That really threw me when I first looked at it.

Here is the pass rate poll I put up a few years back, it's still open so anyone can add to it.

To determine your rate, simply take the number of tests you passed divided by the number of tests you attempted (4 passed/5 attempted = .80) and move the decimal two places to the left .80 = 80%

http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...mbers.html

Last time I looked, roughly 70% of our reporting members have PERFECT 100% pass rates.

I want to add that it's an assumption of many people, myself included, that the DOD pass rates likely include many people who take tests cold, that's never been confirmed or denied- pure speculation.

Dcan, you mention that it appears some of the tests are calculated twice. They are only listed twice because the PBT reflects the paper-based tests and CBT reflects the computer-based tests. Once they come out with the rates for this year, there shouldn't be ANY PBT for CLEP as the bases supposedly have done away with them.

No, I meant the same tests show up twice within the same PDF. For example, open the first PDF and search for "statistics" and you will find the following:

Code:
Form   Title                         Pass  Fail  Volume       % Pass
450    PRINCIPLES OF STATISTICS        1      1       2       50.00%
450    PRINCIPLES OF STATISTICS      124    246     370       33.51%

They have the same code but why do they show up twice? I'm guessing there is some metadata tied to the test that is not reflected in the PDF, but that otherwise somehow distinguishes these two variants.

Can anyone give me advice on subjects that have a great pass rate? I am having to take 21 hours by March 1, 2012, in order to get into OCS with The National Guard. Any wisdom would be appreciated.
