DSST Found out I passed test after receiving score I failed.
#1
Back in August I took DSST Foundations of Education using only Instantcert for study. I felt confident that I had done well on this test. When I received my test results I was shocked to find out I failed this test. And not by a little My report said I scored a 29. I up to that point had taken 8 clep and 3 dantes test passing all since last December. I thought I had done well on this exam and was at a loss on how I could obtain such a low score. I put it behind me figuring I either transposed answers on my answer sheet or was completely clueless to this subject matter. I continued testing taking 3 more cleps since that time. Guess what I received in the mail? A correction to my score for the Foundations of ED exam, I did not score a 29 but a 67. I logged onto the COSC site to check my transcript and status report and there it showed the new score with a letter grade of A and 3 more credits!! giving me a total of 102.7 credits. Finally over the 100 credit hour mark. So now that makes me 15 for 15 on testing 11 Cleps and 4 Dantes. I would urge anyone if you failed a Dantes test and you feel something isn't right to follow-up. I didn't and got lucky that they caught and corrected their error. I remember seeing a post either this or on another forum of someone with a similar experience. Anyone else have this happen?
PS Instantcert is more than enough to prepare for this test.

Thanks,
BGN

That's fantastic news BGN,

A score of 29 seems almost inconceivable on ANY of these exams if you have at least studied somewhat for it. Since you had done so well on all your other exams, it should immediately have raised a red flag for you. I wonder what went so drastically wrong with their scoring system?

This has happened, in a lesser extreme, to a few other people too. But I think, in those cases, it was CLEP that messed up! The moral of the story is, if you are at all suspicious about a score, make sure you get them to double check it.

It's one thing if you didn't study, weren't prepared, and were half expecting a 29. But to study adequately, feel you did well, and THEN get a 29? That's a whole different kettle of fish.

I think you can score a 29 just by spelling your name correctly on the info sheet!
hilarious

Anyway, thankfully they caught the mistake, and all is well again. You must have been thrilled to get an 'A' after thinking you had done so devastatingly badly on it.

Congratulations BGN,

Here is the letter I received concerning their error.

"Dear Candidate,
Thomson Prometric has discovered a printing error in the test booklet for your DSST Foundations of Education exam.

Please find enclosed a revised score report.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. "

Okay,

Here's my theory about what happened. They printed the wrong serial number on your test booklet. This caused them to score your exam using the WRONG answer template (IE, for a different version of the exam).

As a result, your score reflects the basic statistical probability of getting any given question correct through nothing more than random luck. Since there were four answer choices per question, the probability of getting each question correct by pure chance was 1 in 4, or 25%.

Add in a little bit of expected variance from the norm (+/- a few), and DANTES' own adjustments to create a scaled score, and you should come out with a score somewhere in the vicinity of 25 give or take a few points (in your case: 29).

This score is almost exactly what we would expect to receive if we simply sat down and randomly selected our answers without even looking at the questions at all.

It's pretty interesting to see this statistical probability expressed in an ACTUAL scored exam directly from DANTES. I'm sorry that you had to be the unwilling case study for this impromptu look at the accuracy of statistical probabilities.

Obviously, once they realised the problem, and scored your exam using the CORRECT answer template, your true score was revealed...and what a great score it was too!

Once again, congratulations!
