No anyone can take them now. At one time they were just for the military , but now they have been opened to everyone.

Many people still refer to them as DANTES. But the current official name is DSST.

The "public" version provided by Prometric is available here:
DSST | Get College Credit They have a tool to search for a testing center but beware that it may be outdated or incomplete. Here in Minnesota they have schools on the list that no longer offer the tests and my CC doesn't show up as an institution which accepts the exams.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

ok I see, I studied for one and called a local testing center who said they offered it. Then I went in to take the exam and was denied entry because i didn't have a Military ID. I was really surprised and ended up taking the Analyzing and interpreting literature CLEP instead. I have been confused ever since.
I'll just try and find another place that will let me in. ![]()

Was the testing center a school, and was it near a base by any chance?

I would suggest not just asking if they offer the DSST exams, especially if you are calling a testing center located on a base. I am at an online university and usually the first question I am asked (at least for the CLEP exams) is whether a testing candidate has to be a student at our university. Always, always ask if they allow ANYONE to test or if there are any restrictions. Sometimes they will even have a different admin fee for their own university students vs. outside candidates. The military reaches an "understanding" with a university to set up a satellite testing center on the bases, so you can't go by the actual name of the testing center.

I agree, and have a perfect example. When I was stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ, there were DSSTs and CLEPs available through a local CC system, which were all off-base. Anyone was eligible to take the exams there, but I believe non-degree seeking students paid an extra fee to test over those that were degree seeking, and we were free.

Call your nearest DeVry University and see what their fees are. Their campus in Fremont, CA offer free testing for all DSST/CLEP tests student or non-student. This may be a campus specific thing, but better than the $25 - $50 charge that centers like University of Phoenix charge.
