To reiterate something I asked earlier: If I take the English Comp, could I still study for it using REA's Freshman Comp book?

Yup, you most certainly could. Also, don't forget that you can get free peterson's practice tests to grade the effectiveness of your study material as I am sure the two formats are slightly different.

Because I'm stupid, I ended up taking both tests instead of just Freshman Comp, which was the one I actually needed. There was a fantastic little 'duh' moment ten minutes into English Comp when I realized I was in the wrong test, but it was too late to switch.
My personal opinion is that Freshman Comp is the easier test. I had a lot of eye strain from trying to read dense text on the CLEP screen, and while I scored the same on both I came out of Freshman Comp feeling far less drained; it replaces some of the analysis and sentence structure questions with general reference questions. Some were about citations, and other were along the lines of "would you look up the GDP of Mongolia in a: Thesaurus, Dictionary, Journal Article, Encyclopedia - in other words, obvious. If I had my pick again, I'd take Freshman Comp. Read the Owl's guide to research and citations, and you're good.
