I am helping my siblings with their degree completion! My brother is active duty MP in the army and wants to get the AAS Degree in Environmental, Safety and Security Technologies to tie up the credit he has. I have done a rough work up of his current credits and aside from some of the FEMA classes if they don't count enough of his training toward the core, he needs 2 English and 1 math classes.
Now my brother is not very good with writing; when he was a kid he had issues with reading. I am worried about him passing the CLEP due to the essay portion and wanted to get some ideas to fall back on. He really wants to get this done asap and is really gunning to have it all done in time to make September commencement which means July. I will be having him take a look at ALEKS this weekend for the math and trying to get him to take a practice test for the English so I can help him with the CLEP.
Oh and I did see some talk about DSST only free for the first test for military personal? Is that true for CLEP?

Thanks, I wasn't considering Straighterline (proctoring) and I just looked, the English doesn't have a final exam so it doesn't require a proctor. This is great - I can't wait to see my brother and talk to him all about it.

I could be wrong....but I believe that the nature of SL English Comp (it revolves around submitted papers) would negate the need for any proctoring....there is no proctorable final exam in SL English Comp. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this). Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

The PF is another great idea, I would add that several of the New Mexico Colleges will have shortened and inexpensive options this coming summer. If he needs his hand held a little Clovis CC and New Mexico CC might be great options.

If he needs his hand held, Straighterline now offers professor led options for English Composition I and II as well, and the teacher for both courses is great. I can also confirm no final exam or proctor requirements for either. There are short quiz/exams along the way but most of the course is writing.
Working on: Debating whether I want to pursue a doctoral program or maybe another master's degree in 2022-23

I'm not quite clear on your question so let me break it down both ways. You are correct if you mean that only the first attempt at any one test is free. You are incorrect if you mean that, say, he wanted to take CLEP College Composition and CLEP Introductory Psychology (or whatever) that only whichever he took first would be free. He can take each and every DSST and CLEP test at no charge to him as long as DANTES hasn't funded a previous attempt. If he were to attempt a DANTES-funded exam and fail, then on any subsequent attempt he would have to pay the exam fee just like everyone else.
