Part of it is because the rankings don't really matter and the schools have finally figured that out. Part of it is because some of these schools know they're engaging in unethical practices to boost their rankings and would rather leave the scene than stick around and inevitably get exposed and publicly embarrassed.

Oh yeah, there have been a few institutions that are no longer going to be participating in the US News rankings, so much going on lately in the world of education...
