Fast-Track Online M.Ed. at JMU with Transfer Credits
#1
My husband has a partial scholarship for James Madison University. He wants to get his M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership fully online asynchronous, since he can only do online learning not in campus. He is in-state but travels often.

Program link: JMU M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership https://www.jmu.edu/coe/ltle/teachlead_masters.shtml

A little about him:
• Bachelor’s Degree: Lib Studies from a regionally accredited school.
• Experience: Teaching at a trade school and experience in tech, business, and leadership.
• Eligibility: The program is meant for public school teachers, but JMU confirmed he can apply since it benefits him in teaching.
• Family ties: His father graduated from JMU, so he has personal ties to the school and want to be an alumni. .
• Prior graduate experience: He earned a MAOL from UMPI last year.

Goal:
• He wants to finish as quickly as possible.
• JMU allows up to 10 graduate-level transfer credits. Since he could transfer 10 credits, he would have 20 credits left, which he could finish in two semesters.
• He is considering University of the People (UoPeople) or similar affordable, accredited programs for potential transfer credits to save money and accelerate graduation. He anticipates to start next year due to scheduling but would prefer to take these grad courses if it transfers.

Do you think it’s possible for someone with a RA degree and prior graduate coursework to transfer 10 credits to JMU, leaving him 20 credits to complete over two semesters?

Thank you!

They allow 10 graduate-level transfer credits, but does the MAOL give him 10 credits that are actually transferable to the M.Ed.? Also, if they were, does it matter that they've already been applied to another degree?

Are you thinking the MAOL courses completed below could transfer into the M.Ed. at JMU, or would it be better to take UoPeople’s directly education-focused courses?

I just realized that applying to University of the People will cost 60 dollars for the application fee and 400 dollars per course. If I transfer 5 of these courses to JMU that is 2000 dollars total for the assessment.

JMU still charges about three times more per credit which is a lot higher. I am wondering if there is a cheaper alternative for transferring graduate education courses or if University of the People is really the best option.

I am not sure if they will accept my credits for the MAOL program since it is not strictly an education program although it does include leadership courses.

If anyone knows of free or discount graduate classes that will work for this program please share. Thanks.

Have you asked JMU if they will accept any courses from U of the P as grad transfer credit? I would start there before taking any courses anywhere. Just because a university says they accept transfer credit does not mean that they accept all transfer credit. They can be picky in grad programs. I don't think you'll find any grad courses cheaper than U of the P. With you already having the MAOL I would probably apply and see if they accept any of those credits. Something I've read on here about U of the P is that you can't take whatever class you want. You have to take the classes in the order they've determined so that could impact you as well.
