Grammarly useful for writing
#1
Hello fellow matriculates,

I stumbled upon Grammarly (https://www.grammarly.com), the free browser add-on app to assist with writing assignments.  It's been a fantastic tool in catching missed punctuation, grammar, and/or spelling.  Highly recommend.  Good luck to you.

Grammarly isn't bad but definitely check out ProWritingAid. PWA can be cheaper (if you get the paid versions) and is reportedly better at catching various mistakes than Grammarly is. I'm probably going to switch to PWA from Grammarly because Grammarly actually seems to be getting WORSE lately.

I second this. It's remarkably good at catching all sorts of common mistakes. I do have to warn that it makes a lot of mistakes in its grammar recommendations and sentence rephrasing. Sometimes so much it completely changes the meaning of a sentence. So one has to be cautious when using it and read over everything it suggests. I also recommend reporting the incorrect suggestions, as they use that information to enhance the AI that makes the recommendations.

I've also started using Perrla for APA formatting, citations, and the like. Haven't used it extensively, but so far, I'm pretty impressed.

Is ProWritingAid free? Thank you for this suggestion, I'll definitely check it out.

Pretty sure that PWA has a free version in the same way that Grammarly does. If you want advanced functionality, you have to pay for both.

I agree with you. Grammarly has been incorrect and murdered my original thoughts by incorrectly "correcting" but overall has been so helpful.

Thank you for mentioning Perrla. I'll def check that out too.

I've only used the free version so far which is good for spelling and punctuation only. Maybe I'll splurge for the premium version of one those services when I start on my capstone projects.

Has anyone tried out PWA? How do they feel about it?

About 8 years ago I paid like $8 for Grammarly Premium for a lifetime account. I don't even think those exist anymore. I've been using them for years.

I decided to switch to PWA now. I'm having some issues because it doesn't seem to be fully integrated into Chrome the way that Grammarly is. Maybe I'm just being stupid. Maybe I need to restart Chrome?

But! I do have access to their online web editor (something akin to Google Docs) now. It does seem much nicer than Grammarly. You can choose which spelling to use (American, Canadian, British) and exactly what type of thing you're writing. Suggestions are different if you're writing an academic paper vs. just writing general text.

Also, I just now learned of Premium Plus: https://prowritingaid.com/en/App/PurchasePlus This service includes 60 plagiarism checks per year at no cost. Or you can pay for plagiarism checks separately: https://prowritingaid.com/en/App/PlagiarismChecker

Update: it's working now. I didn't need to do anything. It just wasn't going to work on a textbox that I already had open when I installed the Chrome extension. I already like it A LOT more than Grammarly and wish that I'd switched ages back. It's not difficult to do. Plus, the way it makes suggestions just makes more sense than the way Grammarly operates.
