Nonprofit status of Grand Canyon University officially recognized by U.S. Department of Education

This should clear up the confusion. Over the past several years, I'd read that GCU was or wasn't nonprofit. They were nonprofit according to the IRS and NCAA, but not the Department of Education.

There is a related legal entity called Grand Canyon Education and its subsidiary Orbis Education, which is an Online Program Management company similar to what Academic Partnerships was before purchasing Wiley University Services and rebranding as Risepoint. Orbis Education runs healthcare degree programs at these schools: Our Partners Span Coast to Coast - Orbis Education. Orbis even hires and pays faculty for these schools.

They still have a poor reputation. It was a for-profit school and was publicly traded at one point. They transitioned to a non-profit to avoid paying millions in property taxes.

They're moving in the right direction, I see they've actually improved a bit since the last time (read about them recently). Hopefully they continue onwards and progress further with more student centric changes that would benefit not only the institution but students as well. Transitions take time, they'll get there soon enough...
