Everyone I need your help. A sailor of mine is one class away from graduating with her Bachelor degree. Here is the catch. She requires a General Physics 2 course with lab (4 semester hours total) that is calculus based. Spelman College will not accept an online course from a strictly online college because the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges does not currently accredited strictly online schools.
This is straight from their FAQ: FAQs answers
" Does the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accredit online institutions? SACSCOC has not yet accredited an institution that delivers all its programs online. There are many SACSCOC-accredited institutions that use both traditional face-to-face and distance learning/online modalities for delivering instruction. Many of these institutions also offer some individual programs totally online. Check with your institution of choice regarding online classes or programs. "
So the potential loophole in all of this is to find a college or university accredited by SACSCOC that offers an online, calculus based Physics 2 course with lab.
So far I haven't been able to find anything. I was hoping others on the forum may have run across something that meets this very particular set of requirements. She just needs this one course, and taking the course at the local schools is out. They only offer the required course during working hours, and I already lost that battle completely.
Any takers?

That is bizarre. So, are they saying that they will not accept physics from schools in other regions? Normally, a school will accept science credits either taken online at any regionally accredited school or won't accept online science credits at all. You said they won't accept online credit from a strictly online school, but you didn't say they won't accept online credit from a regionally accredited school with a brick and mortar campus. That means you can look at more than just schools accredited by SACS.

The conversation didn't even get that far. Their policy is they will not accept online courses because they are not allowed to by their accrediting body. As per their accrediting body's FAQ, that may not be entirely iron clad. Strictly online schools are right out. I'll take a listing of any brick and mortar school you can find that offers the online. SOCSCOC accreditation would probably be the easiest sell, but any school that isn't entirely online is potential ammo at this point.

It sounds like they don't understand SACS' policies. Just because they choose not to accredit 100% online schools does not mean SACS schools are prohibited from accepting credits from 100% online schools. SACS schools accept credits from 100% online schools all the time. There is also NOTHING in their policies that says that online credits should not be accepted. I would bet that over 90% of the schools accredited by SACS offer online courses. I'm in Texas, so all regionally-accredited schools based here are accredited by SACS. Almost all of them offer online courses including Texas A&M and University of Texas at Austin. I've attended three schools/systems in Texas that all offered 100% online degree programs. None of the SACS schools I've applied to had any problems within online courses/degrees. As a matter of fact, it is almost impossible to tell that a course was taken online 99% of the time.
In a mission to prove someone wrong, I found out that Florida State University accepts credits from American Military University (100% online). However, I even had trouble talking to their evaluation officer. He insisted that AMU was not accredited or not accredited by an organization recognized by FSU. He saw right on his screen that APUS is accredited under HLC, but he wouldn't accept that HLC is the same thing as the Northern Association. After talking to his supervisor, he told me that they do accept credits from AMU. What is often the problem is that the student doesn't understand accreditation enough to effectively challenge a school employee's misunderstanding of policies. I bet if someone more knowledgeable were to talk to Spelman, then things could be cleared up.
Anyway, Cookderosa often talks about Ocean County College. They offer online physics II with lab. I don't know if it's calculus-based.

Fort Valley State University is an HBCU in Georgia that is accredited by SACS just like Spelman College. Could they seriously look a student in the face and say they will not accept online courses from FVSU?

There are several other HBCUs that offer online degree programs. Most of them are accredited by SACS. Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M, and Florida A&M are just a few of them. Even Howard University offers online programs. They could not tell me they will not accept online courses from Howard University -- the Harvard of HBCUs.

Update for those who helped:
After tossing the response from the regional accrediting body back into their metaphorical faces, my sailor ended up working her way up their administrative staff raising a ruckus. We found her some online physics 2 with lab courses from colleges accredited by the SAME body. When it finally all came down to it, they waived the requirement and graduated her. I appreciate the help everyone.

I attended Morehouse College, which is right next door to Spelman College and have cross-registered at Spelman, both schools are apart of the Atlanta University Center. Both schools are very selective in regard to transfer credit. They don't even accept many transfer students into the colleges. They are very selective when it comes to outside credit. I have seen cases where students who have taken credits at brick and mortar schools have had such declined... just because. Transfer credit is generally only approve by the deans of your department.
I'm not surprised at the struggle they gave her though, its quiet typical. lol
@Sanantone Spelman College is ranked higher amongst HBCU's than Howard, it's the number one ranked HBCU.

They have one of the most beautiful college campuses I've seen in the south too, by the way.
