Timed/Closed Book Essays

When writing an essay for a test (like the CLEP English Comp test, or others -- I know the Critical Reasoning TECEP has something somewhat similar, too), how do you back up your points with proofs without access to references?  This seems rather counter-intuitive to me.

You don't. They don't ask for proof. They want to see that you understand what a 3-paragraph (I think this is what I wrote for the English Comp II TECEP?) or 5-paragraph essay is (CLEP). They want a intro/thesis statement, 3 reasons to explain your thesis, and a summary/conclusion. You do not have to provide any sort of proof at all.

The slightly maniacal part of my brain just gave me the horribly delicious idea to take these tests and write something absurd - like defending patently evil leaders in history as good people - just to irritate the graders. Then the good part of my brain decided it was time to go to sleep.

They give you a prompt, so it's not like you can write whatever you want.
