I agree you cant just memorize the questions you have to understand what is going on. Sorry to hear you didn't pass. Its always good to review the specific feedback section and Wikipedia the terms you dont know that come up in there.

Nothing is going to give you instant credit. You are taking the test to show you have knowledge of the subject, not that you can memorize 250 random facts. Did you just learn the answers or did you read the explanations and look up terms you were unfamiliar with or didn't understand? I have taken many test and before I found instantcert I had to study much harder and longer. I still do not use only IC, but it has made the process much easier for me. As said by others the specific exam feedback is a must too.

IC flashcards along w/this Forum are part of my study "toolbox". I use other tools also, just depends on the test. I have never only used IC, but there is NO WAY I could have passed all of my exams without it. Just my 12 cents

I can't say that the original poster is completely without grounds. Being that this was his first experience with InstaCert, she/he probably had high expectations. Most of us have had enough exposure to the materials and actual CLEP tests to develop some sort of deeper understanding that a new user might not.
Take the sales literature posted on the sign up page at
instacert.com
Quote:Our approach is entirely question-based. Here's all you have to do to prepare for a CLEP* Exam:
* Study our database of questions and detailed explanations
* Do this several times until you've thoroughly learned the materials
* Go take the test!
I see the words 'Here's all you have to do' and think they might be overstating the abilities of the IC flashcards.
That being said, go to the forums and read the test feedback. This is a must for new users to learn if the test is a meat grinder or a walk in the park.

Keep on going!

Methinks this reveals a deep, black hole in the attention-to-detail department. Poor attention to detail=poor test scores.
InstantCert alone, studied and retained properly, will likely result in at least a passing grade on most tests for most people most of the time. Feedback on this forum would support that argument. There are obviously always going to be exceptions and I'm not surprised that 2-post elazzeh was one.

I am glad you shared your experience. I will be taking that DSST. I know or knew absolutely nothing on the matter other than the name of the plants. I learned some history and some basics on light so far on IC flashcards. I also found some educational videos at the library which has really helped in putting things together. Next will be going thru the rest of the flash cards and then watching another video a few times then I'll review a text book. I only chose this test because I need a physical science and this will satisfy that requirement. So wish me luck and please keep sharing your successes and near successes so that I could continue to learn from them.

You need to know much more than the basics. Make sure you understand how stars are made, formed, evolve and die. Make sure you know how their magnitude relates to their luminosity and color etc. Don't take this exam lightly or I promise you, you'll end up regretting it.
