Help with degree plan for mom
#1
Ok my mom is interested in completing an associates mostly for personal achievement but also she would get a little raise at work. She has taken a few courses at the local community college over the years and they were all Quarter Hours. I'm horrible at staying up to date on the latest school changes and credit options, so I was hoping I could get some help making a plan for her. I'm not positive but I think she would prefer ease and speed over cost savings.

Based on my calculations, here's what I show it would cost to get an AA in General/Liberal Studies at the Big 3 (this is just fees paid to the schools, doesn't include all of the 57-59cr of required coursework):

TESU - $2,698 (app, cornerstone, residency waiver, graduation)
COSC - $1,738 (app, cornerstone, student services fee, tech fee, graduation)
EC - $3,665 (app, enrollment, student services fee, capstone, graduation)

I would go with COSC if it were up to me, I also think they are fairly lenient in what you can take: https://www.charteroak.edu/catalog/curre...ements.cfm

They will also take a bunch of free FEMA courses that the others won't, so that's a nice help.

Anything marked as DEV will probably not transfer (they definitely won't at TESU). So it looks like she would have 12cr (semester) to transfer in.

Good for your mom! I agree with dfrecore, and would just add that the West Virginia Board of Governors AAS degrees might be another good option. Search the forum because we have had several threads about those over the past few years.

The student services fee at Excelsior is not paid in the first year. It's a fee to maintain enrollment.

I wish I could get my kids to do all of my degree planning for me! Should I ask for that as a birthday present or something?

Is your mom a good test taker? She may be able to test out of many credits. What is she good at? What interests her? If she likes history, testing out of history may be fast and inexpensive. Check with your local community college and see what their policies are on credit by examination.

I think dfrecore is spot on about COSC. If I had to choose for an AA they have the simplest, most straight forward requirements for the AA. 40 Gen Ed credits including cornerstone and the rest can be filled in with her electives and FEMA. Converting the quarter hours to SH yields approx 12 credits (not including the developmental courses which won't count). So with 8 FEMA that's 32. I suspect that 9.33 of the 12 will go into electives. The other 2.67 is for the business math which may count as the math requirement (check with COSC on this). She can do a few FEMAs to get herself started/motivated. She can then start knocking out some CLEP and straighterline. For math there's always ALEKs to round it out.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

I wish they would make that clear, I always forget when I look at their website to see what tuition is. Thank you.

Can you tell me how the $600 is computed? I can't figure it out from their website.

$606 per course, plus miscellaneous fees and probably a graduation fee. The degree only requires a one course residency.
